Hi Power?

Looking for a surplus Hi Power 9mm. What's a good one? Not looking to spend a bunch of money. Anything to avoid? What is a good buy in military surplus Hi-Powers?

Thanks.

I would try to get a genuine belgian made example, but there are several countries that made them. I would say $700 for a near mint condition hi-power would be a good deal

You might want to avoid Canadian ones where the parts don't interchange with FN ones, or older models where extractor, etc., design has changed.

This was one of the Izzy surplus Hi Powers that were around a couple years ago, with some C&S parts, night sites and Cera-Kote:

I've had a couple of Argentine FM copy/clones. They seem to work well, and have been in the price range you mentioned.

Having owned quite a few Hi Powers since the '60s, I would recommend one of the MKIII variations, most of which are marked "Made in Belgium, Assembled in Portugal". They have more usable sights and thumb safety as received, straight feed ramp (said to improve reliability with JHP ammo), a redesigned ejection port(said to resist cracking of slide in that area), etc. These will be found with forged or cast frames. Just good all around pistols IMHO. All of my Hi Powers, from a ratty old WWII INGLIS, pre T Series, several T and C Series, to 2009 commercial production, were very good guns. But for a Hi Power to be actually used, rather than just collected, the MKIII is hard to beat. I'm down to just three Hi Powers now. A 1981 GP, '66 T series, and an '89 MKIII. I've seen CDI sales spoken highly of as a source for surplus Hi Powers.

I've been real happy with my SA FEG clone. Removed the magazine disconnect , and the trigger is now very nice. There are some excellent replacement grips available for minimal outlay as well.

Yea Cajunbass,
I have a Argentine FM copy/clone that I got new & is still LNIB that I am thinking of selling. I will have to count them but I have many magazines to go with it. If you think you may want it just p/m me. I will tell you all about it. Gloole Fm & you can find out more on there Hi-power's. I but on Hi-power wood grips on it but still have the black plastic grips it came with. Its a really nice gun I just need to weed down some of my guns I have. Let me know. Thank you.

CDI Sales on Gunbroker has some right now. The cheapest one I saw was $275.

I bought one of the Hungarian FEG ones in the late 1980's for $200. It still shoots great. It is the single-action one that is a "clone" of the High Power. They also sold a double-action pistol that sort of looked like a High Power, but was supposedly more like a Smith and Wesson.

inexpensive High Power

About a year ago I picked up an Israeli police surplus for less than $400. It's not pretty but functions perfectly. You might want to check some of the importers.

By now you have been inundated with suggestions on where and what to get in a High Power pistol so my information may not be new. I have a number of the FN and Browning marked pistols the last bunch came from the Isreali imports and include a nice T series, E series, nnMk II and III and a commercial proof pre MkII. As the pistols (except T & E series) all sported scratched enamel my gun bluing buddy stripped each, bead blasted, and lightly buffed before blue. The man is a master the way the pistols retained all sharp corners and lettering.

Point is you can end up with one fine looking pistol that you will proudly shoot for many years to come. I put thin grips from Altamont on them and they look like they should be in the new pistol case at the gun shop they are that nice.
My pistols came from Aim ( import mark small and on bottom of dust cover) Surplus and CDI Sales on Gunbroker. Although heavily picked over you may still find a cherry one but do not expect to pay $395 for it.

I have purchased a lot of rifles and pistols on my C&R as well as friend's FFL and with only a couple of exceptions the firearms were very serviceable ( some like new) and will give many years of service.

Thanks gang.

I just scored a like new beautiful condition commercial Mk III off Gunbroker for $450. Doesn't have a mark on it from the pictures and good description. No it has not been refinished, factory black enamel. It's a 99%+ gun easily. Considering new Mk IIIs are about twice that I think I stole it. It's cherry.

Model12, In the condition you described, you did steal it. Hope you'll post a few photos once you get it. I just don't think you can go wrong with a MKIII.
