Hi-power 'smiths and modifications...your experiences

I am a huge fan of hi-powers and will always have one as my carry/use gun. I have tried several gunsmiths and have done some work on hi-powers myself, but I am always curious to see what the experiences of others have been. Anyone willing to share with me/us what gunsmiths you've used and what modifications you've had done to your hi-power(s)?

Hello, I live in the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex and have had Lou Williamson and son, Scott, work on several HPs over the past several years. Lou's first work on my first HP was in '71 when my HP's factory adjustable sights were replaced with S&W K-frame revolver sights and a serrated ramp was silver soldered to the slide. The gun was hard chromed (armalloyed). Over the years, I've had BarSto bbls fitted as well as BoMar sights on one HP. Hammers have been bobbed, and trigger jobs done. The latest job for me done at Williamson Precision Gunsmithing in Hurst, TX was to have a set of Novak fixed sights put on a MkIII HP. I like few changes, but do like good sights and a good trigger. On one HP that had particularly long overtravel, a trigger-stop was added. I routinely remove magazine safeties to improve trigger pull and add Spegel stocks. Best.

I sent my all Belgian Hi-Power to Novak's several years ago and couldn't be happier. They did a very nice trigger job, Novak's low mount sights, and extended safety, and reblued the entire pistol. It looks a shoots great!

(This was when Kirt Wickmann was still with Novak and he did the work on my pistol. He is now on his own. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Novak's or Wickmann)

I stay with the mk3's any more....and the major modifications anymore are just a c/s internals and spegel grips and I like some form of stippling front and back and usually have a tail added to it...I grip very high and the slide gives me problems....Ive used Novak and a couple of local smiths to build the last two....fubsy.

You can see my HP at Wickmann's web site and my review here.

I pretty much had everything done to this particular MKIII- I wanted one "full house" HP in my collecion. Right now I've got a silver/chrome model that I'm going to send to Kurt for the following work-
•replace sights
•trigger job
•relability pkg (just in case)
•recrown barrel
•Spegel grips

thats really all this HP needs to suit me to a tee. The reliability and accuracy of the MKIII series is very good. Most mods are personal preferences imo.

My MK III didn't need any smithing. Super reliable right from the box. But I did send it to Kurt Wickmann to have the barrel crowned. He's good, he's affordable, he's relatively quick.

I had Qualitie Pistol and Revolver (Denver) add an extended safety on my FEG hi-power and I'm thinking about disconnecting the magazine safety and a heartier finish (bluing rubbing off on the heel of the gun from use) Rather than a shiny nickel I was thinking of parkerizing or similar durable finish.
