Hi-Power Opinions

Well I know Im going to get crucified for this, But Does anybody else agree with me, That the Browning Hi-Power is just one ugly gun?

I love the classics, love John Moses Browning. I am crazy about all of my 1911s, as well most of my pistols are all metal, hammer fired guns. But no matter how hard I try and like the Hi-Power, I just cant get over its odd, ugly look.

I really can appreciate the gun for what it is, and I know alot of people love them. Im just wondering if Im the only person that thinks they are just not a very attractive gun?

I dont know, I always kind of liked their looks, but I know what you mean, they are a little different looking.

Handling and shooting one, takes away any thought or care of looks. Same can be said of Glocks, which really are ugly in comparison. :)

Nah, I get you. They aren't for everyone, but just like the girl you didn't notice at first, then found out she was an amazing cook, loved the same music as you, laughed at all your jokes and just wanted to make you happy, the Hi-Power improves upon closer inspection. To the point of wondering what on earth you ever saw in those other girls, er, I mean guns. :D

Yes Glocks are very ugly... I can appreciate glocks as well though. I carry one everyday, and is the only striker fired pistol I own. I would like to shoot a HiPower sometime

^^ Yup.

I love the lines of the Hi Power as much as the 1911, both are the pinnacle of autoloader beauty in my eyes.

Then again, I think Glocks look cool too, so take my opinion for what it is worth.

To me the only thing odd about the looks of the High Power is that the slide sits back further than on the 1911. That is not especially "ugly", though it makes cocking the pistol with one hand difficult should one carry the gun hammer down on a loaded chamber.

They touch my heart !!!

I believe you are expressing your opinion and that's fine. There are some that share the same "opinion". However, it is my opinion that most folks love the classic lines and find that they touch one's heart. .....

Take a second look and;
Be Safe !!!

Some where there is someone who agrees with you. There's a few billion people on the planet, so the math says that possibly a couple of dozen will agree with you. It's definitely not a widely held opinion.

While the lines of the HP are not particularly sexy, the finish and craftsmanship on the polished blue models is amazing.

I like them. OTOH, I find the 1911 angular. It looks like it should almost hurt to hold it. I'm not really fond of the bisley models.

There are just certain things that certain people have never managed to integrate.

I dislike country and like classical. I hate warhol and like rembrandt. I like the highpower and dislike the beretta.

To me Hipowers are sexy looking. They have a beautiful finish. They are a out of date design. They are not worth the $900.00 asking price.

I'm in agreement with the OP to me it's not the most aesthetically pleasing handgun. That said they can look good and when you hold one you don't really care about how it looks, at least to me. To date it's the most comfortable handgun i've held.

This doesn't look bad to me.

I think I'm about 180 degrees from the OP. I think most Hi-Powers are extremely attractive looking pistols except for a select few of them that are TOTALLY gorgeous.

However...
Their entire design and execution is, to me, pretty lousy. The oddball system of trigger actuating a lever in the slide which trips a sear back in the frame is pure oddity, IMO. It seems Rube Goldberg.

That sear is directly behind the trigger, more or less, just like a 1911. And a 1911 has damn near the greatest trigger in all of gundom. But the BHP elects to use the wierd system of tipping levers rather than a direct, in-line push.

Result? Pivoting trigger. Every pistol ever made begs for help. Comically long over travel and maybe the world's most vague trigger reset in the history of handguns.

I think they look great and feel great in the shooting hand. But -ALL- stock BHP's give me hammer bite to some degree and the trigger system is infuriating when you consider that the 1911 design is like sent directly from Heaven and the BHP seemingly went to great lengths to re-invent the wheel so poorly.

I do absolutely love the way they look.
