Hi-Power Clone: Questions

There was a Hi-Power clone in the shop today that caught my interest, especially with the $300 price tag.

The importers marks said KBI, but the original rollstamp on the slide says "FEG" and "Made in Hungary".

Is this pistol decent quality? Is it reliable enough to be worth the $300 bucks?

Will it take regular Hi-Power magazines that are so abundant?

Thanks.

I have a FEG hi power clone. I paid $199 NIB for mine. I wouldn't go much more than that for one. Not that they are not worth it, but they should be able to be found for around the $200 - $230 mark.

The only real difference I can find between the FEG and real hi power is that, mine at least, had a slightly grittier trigger than the Browning hi-power. Removal of the mag safety cleared that right up.

Mine does accept the 13 and 17 round magazines and functions just as flawlessly as the Browning originals that I have come across.

Thats a little high priced for a FEG.I got my FP-9 for about $220.00.They are great guns and exceedingly reliable.I have 10-13-17-and 30 round High Power mags that i use in mine. The only drawback to FEG's,is that they are very nicely blued, and you need to wipe them down with oil soon after using or else you risk wrecking the finish (thats what i was told).
P.S.keep it on the hush-hush about the cheap hi-caps!;)

Ditto what gyphon said.

I paid $199 for mine with 2 15 round hi-caps, except they only take 14 rounds, but 14 is fine, no, actually it's great.

The trigger is a nightmare, and I have some terrible finishing marks around the rear sight (which itself looks like it was fitted by a Hungarian pig farmer) which has also lost some of its blue. I didn't take it back though, oh no, it was still too good for that.

The barrel is fine quality stainless, and the gun points and feels like a winner, well it is a Hi-Power after all.

Love HATE relationship with MY FEG

The FEG 9mm HP clones have received praise everywhere I checked...Lusted after one for years...THEN a few years ago I see Century offers the same in .45 acp as an FEG ACK 45. KBI was the principle importer and it appeared to have laid an egg...didnt see any for 10 years.

YEARS LATER AT A SHOW a local German Weapons importer I knew started offering them retail for $290.00 (http://www.ssmedwi.com) and I snagged one. I havent shot .45 acp since 1964, preferring nines.

This was the must accurate pistol EVER!...I get all the magazine in a 3" bull at 15 yards

Then after about 200 rounds, it throws the front sight off! Importer offers me repair or replace option ( do I WANT to divest myself of such a good shooter? He** NO!) Turnaround was 1 WEEK! No dealer has treated me so well. And he returned the repaired gun with an EXTRA front sight just in case I needed it.
(Customer good will established in CONCRETE!) (He's currently offering Soviet late war/postwar T33's (Tokarevs) without Brady-trigger-block mods and discreet import logo)

50 ROUNDS AND THE FRONT SIGHT COMES OFF AGAIN! Epoxied it in myself and it lasted 90 rounds. Took it to a gunsmith and invested $37.00 and had it silver soldered...WORKS FINE!

What we have, eveidently is poor design. Others on a defunct FEG lkist complain about "thrown front sights too. I think FEG needs to look at this issue SERIOUSLY.

Personally, my FEG has never done anything but go bang when I pulled the trigger, so I don't see anything wrong with the design. After all, what to you expect in a $200 gun? I did remove the magazine disconnect, that really improved the trigger a bunch. FWIW, the new FEG HP clones coming in are not parts compatible with the BHP, they've redesigned the barrel lock-up, so many parts will no longer be compatible. Obviously, they didn't tinker with the magazine, so those nice SA 17 round mags still work fine in the new ones. :)

I bought a FEG PJK-9HP about 2.5 yrs ago. Love it. It likes the 17 rnd. mags. Mine even had a good trigger. I recommend it. Put a Hogue Monogrip on it and you will have a hard time finding any pistol that feels better in your hand, at any price.

Well, at least if your hand is shaped anything like mine...

I have shot some Brownings, and my FEG doesn't feel significantly different.

Direct quote from Bill Laughridge of Cylinder and Slide, on comparing FEG's vs. FN's: "They're the same gun." Mine has been flawless for several years and several thousand rounds. $300 is too much only because they can be had for less. They are certainly worth $300 and more, function-wise. YMMV.
