Hi-Power Browning

My wife's uncle gave me a hi-power Browning from his own personal collection over the Christmas holidays. He says that he used it when he was in the service back in the 1950's -- I was always under the impression that our military used 1911's. Anyway. How do I field strip it. I can pretty much field strip a browning BDA, a colt 1911 and various S&W pistols with my eyes closed but I can't seem to figure out how to get the process started with the hi-power. Any pointers that anyone can offer will be appreciated.

Remove magazine

check to make certain chamber's empty

pull back on slide & keep in rear position with safety lever

push (from right side as gripping) slide stop & grasp from left side & remove

grasp slide & while holding back release safety & SLOWLY allow slide to come forward & remove from frame

On slide:

grasp & push into slide, the recoil spring guide assy & remove with spring

ready to clean

reassembly is reverse

make sure recoil spring guide is in proper orientation (hint, gun won't work if not)

To the best of my knowledge the Browning Hi-Power was not an item of issue by the Army. However...the Browning H-Power was used by a lot of us that was in Special Forces back in the 50s. The reason being was S.F. was not allowed to use weapons of American manufacture. When a team was deployed it had to be sterile.

Thanks to everyone who provided me with instructions on how to field strip the Hi-Power. Once I got past properly lining up the slide and removing the lever, everything else was no problem -- I was able to take it apart and put it back together again. I can't wait for the week-end to take it out to the range.
