Hi-Point Update

Well it has been a bit since I have reported on my Hi-Points and I wanted to get extra rounds in so I could do it right.
Well for starters I have well over 8000 rnds through my JC40,
.40 S&W and so far few if any hickups other than some ammo she just doesnt like. I have had her completely tore down now 19 times and she still goes back together without any faults. I have gone through 2 mags that ended up with weak springs but Hi-Point replaced those for me. I like too carry CCW this girl on a shoulder harnes because of weight and I have carried her all through a complete day many many times. I do have something though, has anyone ever worn out there Hogue universal slip on grip, I had to replace this one from wear and tearing.
As for my 9mm Compensator Hi-Point I have just broken the 10,000 rnd point with her and other than some ammo she doesnt like I am quiet pleased. I did have to send to Hi-Point for the internal magazine release latch that seemed to wear down and I think it could be from me dropping mags and slamming another one home fast and hard. I'll work on that.
Oh yes, the manufacture sent it to me the part for free along with 2 10rnd mags for my trouble. Nice people.
Both handguns continue too be my carry weapons also and I am looking forward too the 20,000 rnd level and see what wears by then.
I like too carry the 9mm on my strong side FBI cant because it is lighter than the .40.
Well out too the range again...........hope you all are having as much fun as I am........Now too start on that reloading thing.

Glad to hear it, but my life's worth more than believing in a so-so handgun with a poor track record. I'll pass on the Hi-point.

Well...

...if my only choices were Jennings, Lorcin, or Hi Point, I'd take the Hi Point.

On the other hand, there's a nice, concealable, ultra-reliable, milled steel gun in the same price class that I'd definitely pick first.

you mean someone makes holsters for it...and a shoulder rig at that?!?!

Please dont take this as an insult, but if you can afford to put 8K and 10k rounds through your hi-points, couldnt you aford a better gun? I always kinda though of HI-Points and the like as marketed to folks that couldnt afford a better gun.

The sholder holster you are carring that POS in is it a horizontal type?

If so that dangereous piece of junk is always pointing at people behind you.

For what you paid for the High point you could have bought a choice of several decent and SAFE guns.

Why risk our lives by carring a unsafe weapon.

Oooh, Carbon_15 makes an excellent point there... ;)

The going price on halfway decent 9x19 FMJ ammunition is around the $100/1000 vicinity. Using that as a template, one would spend approximately $1,000 on 10K of ammunition.

You do know you can by a real cherry-of-a-handgun for $1000, right?

It probably cost you another $1,000 to put 800 rounds through your .40S&W Hi-Point. I can only hope you didn't do it primarily to prove a point.

I also certainly hope you used handloads. :(

BTW, does Hi-Point use ordnance steel or zinc alloy (pot metal) in their frames?

I can't speak for the Hi-Point pistols, but I got a silly idea this weekend concerning my Hi-Point 995 carbine. I bought a set of 6$ weaver-style Tasco scope rings, and mounted a 4-16X 50mm BSA CatsEye scope on it. Took it to the range Monday, and it will put three shots of 124gr +P CCI Gold Dots into one ragged cloverleafed hole at 50 yards. I've been putting a lot of rounds through it since Christmas, and have yet to get one hiccup. I'm considering taking it turkey hunting next month.

Hi-Point reliability

A few months ago we took 11 pisotls recovered by an area agency and tested them. It was a mix of Hi-Point, Lorcin and Jennings. The Lorcin and Jennings fell apart, literally within 500 rounds. The Hi-point's were both running well after 3000 and they had very few jams and were reasonably accurate.

The guy that designed them says that they were not intended for CCW but to provide a reliable home defense weapon at a reaonable price. He did that.

An area sheriff's dept has provided Hi-Point carbines in their cars and they are holding up well and are amazingly accurate. The one kept at the range now has 12400 thru it with no problems.

I'm glad to get the update. My Hi-Point comp-9 has been flawless with the exception of occasionally not liking winchester white box(like so many other guns-including some of mine). These people that have a stroke because Hi-Point makes a reliable and accurate gun at a very reasonable price totally crack me up! Cornbread needs to take a chill pill on his or her assessment of other peoples choices in guns.If i were to follow his or her advice,i would be well advised to seal all my guns in blocks of concrete until needed!;)

I have a Hi-point 9mm carbine...but thats a whole different animal from their handguns. I just bought it as a toy to offend the local "range snobs" with its consistant one-hole groups.

Oh Boy

I have learned so much from joing this little group. How to and not too on so many subjects. And I am so impressed on how many here actually have something constructive too say and then those who...well....don't.
And someone said for the amount of ammo I am spending money on I could buy a REALLY good gun, maybe then I wouldnt have to shoot it as much being it was GARUANTEED too work...right....yea well if you believe that ....never mind.
Dont bother doing searches in here about any problem with Sigs or Glocks or HK's or any of your fancy little 1911 wantabees I am sure you wont find any....right....
I'll stick with my Hi-Points shoot a lot and if we ever get to shoot with each other we will see who can hit that $%^# target.

And too others , thank you for your comments on improving my sight picture,,,really worked.
Well I guess I'll get my stuff togeather put on my HORIZONTAL
SHOULDER RIG load up my JC40 and head out.
I'll let you know progress later
Tony

I am very glad that you don't live in Ky.

I won't have to worry about you carring a High point in your horizontal sholder holster while I stand behind you in line at the check out at Walmart.

You will be pointing that dangerous POS at innocent people in your state not mine.

My own personal experience with High-Point pistols has been:

- They are indeed, reasonably reliable.
- They have horrible triggers. Really, really bad.
- They point like a brick.

Not for me. There's more to a gun than reliability. But hey, if it's the best gun for you, you won't hear a peep from me. Maybe get a few funny looks tho...

- Chris

Tony, in what condition do you carry your Hi-Point? Do you keep a round in the chamber with the safety on for CCW, or do you just go empty-chamber/full-mag? Also, how's the reliability with HPs (or do you just use those expanding FMJs) for self-defense?

Well...

...I've owned a couple out of curiosity; they were the top of the pops when compared to Jennings/Brycos, Lorcins and the like. They never went the 250+ rounds without a stoppage that I consider to be the minimum standard for a CCW gun; although if one was absolutely strapped for cash, they're better than any other gun in their price range with the exception of the Makarov or Tokarev.

For CCW, I'd still prefer the more compact, lighter and more reliable Makarov.

I definitely don't recommend that a single-action striker-fired pistol with no safety other than a simple trigger block be carried chamber-loaded.
