Whats your thoughts between these two for the price. New price point the hi point lets say $140 and the taurus $200. which would you choose for a fun truck gun.

note this would not be a primary defensive gun but more or less a prepper truck gun. (I am by no means a prepper just a video on youtube sparked this idea in my head so I am interested to see what y'all's take is)

Between the two I would go with the Taurus. I am not a fan of either but it is the less of two evils. When I handled the PT I was not impressed with the trigger, other then that it was OK and would make a good compact piece. I also don't leave a gun in the truck overnight, I find it to be poor judgement leaving a firearm protected by a piece of glass . YMMV

Same reason I don't put Glock/Kimber/Sig stickers on my truck and keep them in my garage.

smee, i agree completely. this discussion is purely theoretical. I doubt I will be buying either guns at any point but more or less, just entertaining the idea of budget guns/arsenals. I do not leave any guns in my truck as well or put gun stickers on it. I also never wear tactical looking or firearm brand shirts when I carry, the idea is to be concealed ;)

The Taurus is a lighter, more "conventional" choice. However it has the Taurus reputation of questionable quality control, and less than desirable customer service. Deserved, or not, that is the reputation.
Hi-Point has been proven to be nearly indestructible, and if you do manage to tear one up, they stand behind it fully, no questions. They are also amazingly accurate. Especially considering the price.
Look at it this way, Hi-Point and $60 worth of ammo, or the Taurus for two hundred bucks.:D

The pt111 g2s sell out like hotcakes when I have them new at a good bit over $200. The hi points definitely sell quickly at about $160. But imo, I'd spend the extra cash on the any day of the week.

I cannot imagine buying either one but i have different requirements in firearms. One inexpenssive pistol that i have found to be well made, trouble free (at least in my experience) is the SCCY 2. For less than $300 you get a small 9mm that is built to last, reliable and sensational factory service.

I would buy the Hi-Point, lifetime warranty...

Taurus also has a lifetime warranty. Lifetime of the gun, not just while the original owner has it. http://www.taurususa.com/repair-policy.cfm

...and has less problems than Taurus.

I own two Taurus handguns, a PT22PLY and a Model 83 revolver. The PT22 has near 500 rounds without a failure of any type. Not one. I pocket carry it daily during the warm weather months. The M83 is also flawless, and extremely accurate. I'm thinking seriously about a PT111.

The HiPoint is 29 ounces. The PT111 is 22 ounces. That pretty much settles it in favor of the HiPoint.

The PT111 is considered a small frame concealed carry pistol. It should be lighter, correct?

Build quality is comparing apples to oranges.
The HP is heavier because it's zinc construction requires a massive slide for it's blowback operation.
The Taurus is a much more conventional weapon.

Apples to pecans...

The Taurus... no question.

All the naysayers about Taurus quality have not researched the PT111 G2...

I've heard less bad about it out of the box than nearly ANY other compact 9mm.

Do your research.

Do you want a clunky hunk of zinc, or a real carry gun that is arguably the best gun for under $400? Except it's closer to $200? And a trigger pull that puts MOST other striker guns to shame.

Mine has upwards of 800 rounds or more with ZERO failures.

I've shot everything from 115 to 147 gr stuff, just about every brand except the steel jacket stuff.

My wife owns a PT111 G2 and she loves it. She has had no reliability problems and it is pretty accurate.

I might buy one for myself for a smaller concealed carry gun.

My thinking was that when either are ready to be sent back to the manufacturer for free lifetime warranty service the HiPoint makes the bigger and better club. It is great that whoever inherits the gun from you after your death when it fails at the worst possible moment will be able send it in. Of course I'd rather not have to send it in.

:D

I've never owned a Taurus automatic, so I know nothing about the PT-111, but have owned a number of their revolvers. Never had a problem.

I DID own a Hi-Point C-9 for several years and it was just what the OP said he wanted. A just plain fun gun. Worked like a champ, hit where it was aimed, and almost always got a comment or two from the railbirds at the range. A couple who shot it, went inside and bought one for themselves. I put a couple thousand rounds through that silly thing before I got bored with it and sold it for almost what I paid for it. Probably could have gotten more. I had a half dozen "I'll take it if he doesn't" responses to the add.

I've got a Hi-Point 995, 9mm Carbine now. Pretty much the same thing. For a fun gun, they're hard to beat. And I wouldn't hesitate to use one for serious work if it's all I had or all I could afford.
