Hi-just want to introduce myself.

Truckman

Hello-I'm Truckman. Got the nickname from the fact that,of the 101 vehicles I've owned and driven, all but 18 have been trucks. (Some of the cars got used so hard they THOUGHT they were trucks.)
I grew up in a largely pacifist home;when Dad came back from Germany after WWII he didn't want anything to do with war,or conflicts at all. I've lived most of my life in a similar way,but with the current President (or a reasonable imitation) I've seen that I'll need to change my ways soon. I bought a High Point C-9 9mm new a while back from CAL Ranch Store here.(I asked for,and got,a stock gun,NIB.) Being new with guns ,outside of air rifles and the likes,I'm having a well trained friend teach me proper gun safety and usage. She taught this stuff in the Navy. I started out by screwing up royally and changing the rear sight on the gun;didn't like it and changed it back. But now,I don't know where it's set,and I'm not skilled enough to tune it in,so my friend offered to do that, then I'll learn the fun part of owning this gun.
I read on a different forum while I was browsing for the right place to be,somebody bought the same gun I have, and ws having trouble with it jamming, and those people couldn't find anything good to say about it. (Unreliable, made of plastic,POS,you buy a $100.00 gun, whaddya expect? etc.) They almost kicked the guy off the forum! anyway,I like the way you folks carry yourselves here. I hope I won't drive you crazy with stupid questions. I know the High Point is a cheap (priced) gun,but my friends all seem happy with theirs, and as they pointed out, with a lifetime guarantee, how can you go wrong? So far, what I've been reading says they're pretty accurate, and reliable once the clip is "broken in",that's good enough for me. I imagine once I'm a passable shot,I'll be wanting to buy more guns, but as it stands right now,it's more ammo for this one,and parts for my trucks and my bike. Hopefully, before they get outlawed,I can get my CCW permit, but I have a ton of learning and practicing to do first. I'm told Nevada is an open-carry state;so if I see the need,I can carry my gun holstered as long as I make sure it doesn't get covered by a coat or whatever,am I right?

Truckman:

As one newb to another: welcome aboard.

As for the poor fellow with the jamming problem (I am not an auto sort) somebody should have told him that the brand of ammunition can be the culprit.

Enjoy the sport/hobby/perspective. There's a good crowd here.

Have fun man, and go for an upgrade when you get the scratch to do it. There's nothing really wrong with a Hi-Point, but when you get a better gun, you'll realize that it really makes a difference when you get something pricier. I'm not talking $1000 either. XD's and Glocks are super reliable, no matter what you do to them. I wouldn't stake my life on a hi point, but it's a good pistol to learn on. Most important is having fun learning. And save yourself some serious heartache by paying a lot of attention to your trigger squeeze. I didn't learn a good trigger squeeze until a year or so ago, and it's helped my accuracy tons. The most fun I normally have is shooting a 10/22 with my uncle. Stupid trick shooting mostly. Try it. You learn a lot doing that. Make brass while the sun shines! And don't pay tons of attention to all the scare tactics. "Buy guns cause they'll be illegal soon!" is mostly garbage.

OK. What you have is a gun that's...well, kinda mediocre at best. And you need to have it be reliable for personal defense.

First thing is to try feeding it a decent amount (at least 100 rounds, 200 would be better) of plain old "ball" ammo - round nose copper jacketed much like the US military uses. Get the gun to a point where it'll feed that.

Next, get ahold of some defense ammo that has a "ball like profile". Two of the best in that field are the Federal "EFMJ" ("Expanding Full Metal Jacket") and the Cor-Bon Pow'R'Ball.

The EFMJ looks like plain ball ammo. The nose has a rubber ball in it which "squishes" and lets the nose area go flat for better wounding. They won't get as wide as the best combat hollowpoints BUT the expansion is extremely reliable and they're known for easy feeding.

The Pow'R'Ball works more like a conventional hollowpoint, except the "hollow" is filled with a, you guessed it, rubber ball. On impact the ball squishes, starting the hollowpoint expansion cycle, and then the rubber falls away and the bullet acts more like a typical high-end hollowpoint. And yet again, before firing it has a standard "round ball nose" that lets it slide easily up the feed ramp and into the back of the barrel. The Pow'R'Ball is loaded hotter than the EFMJ and expands much fatter for more wounding...but the EFMJ has THE most reliable expansion process in handgun bullets, period.

Now, even picking combat ammo known for easy feeding, you're supposed to test about 200 of 'em in your gun before trusting your butt to the combination. But I guarantee you 200 Pow'R'Balls will be worth more than double what the gun is worth and the EFMJs are also pricey, although not as bad.

In my case, I'm kind of a stickler for running high-grade ammo. Since I don't want to have to test huge amounts, I went with revolvers early and have never looked back. So long as the stuff goes "boom", revolvers don't care what funky shaped bullets you feed 'em as there's no "feed ramp" involved. You can experiment with a wide power range of all sorts of weird ammo, to whatever degree you like.

welcome, i went thru the same issues 5 ys ago.
i bought a cheap taurus nib at a gun show. damn thing wouldn't feed about half the time.
in hind sight it probably the mags (not clips).
good luck.

Truckman, welcome to TFL -

Remember, your knowledge, skill level, and safe handling practices are what's most important. Not what kind of gun you have. I know guys that can out shoot me with a Jennings .25. Well, almost! :D

I've only been shooting and carrying for about 10 or 11 years. I try to learn a little each day, try to be safer each day, and do things the right way.

This is a good place to start. There are a whole lot of people here that have been doing it a lot longer than me, and I respect everyone of them. I like this forum. :) I think you will like it too. Good luck on your new hobby (addiction)

Now, go buy a Glock or a Kimber! :p

Welcome truckman

nothing wrong with a Hi-Point, take care of it and enjoy it until its time for an upgrade, I sold mine not long ago and it had close to 2k rounds down the tube, I found it to be very reliable. I did recently have a new SIG break down on me, mmmm, well any gun can have a problem I guess. Keep em clean and shoot safe.

The only stupid question is the one that doesn't get asked !! No one with knowledge will ever laugh at a legitimate question that a "newbie" has. We have all been there in the past. Further, no matter how much knowledge one posses about a particular topic, there is always room to learn something new by someone else asking a question. Bottom line...ASK AWAY.

Welcome Truckman to TFL!

Glad you got the C9.. A lot of us like to joke about
them myself included but, we mean it all in good fun.

Plan on getting a Hi Point .45 myself for a plinker at
the range.

Stay with us here.

Inexpensive Handguns

I bought a Taurus Millenium Pro 40 at cabelas on sale a few years back (I think it was $249?) and it's a great gun. Glad you found something that you could afford to get started.

I discovered there are a lot of people out there who are willing to help you in the handgun sports. I joined a conservation club about the same time and found out we have USPSA (US Practical Shooting Assn.), Cowboy shooting (single sixes, shotguns and lever actions), defensive shooting association, WheelGunners and a few I can't remember. Hook up with a good club and you'll learn more about safety (always a good place to start), plus handling and shooting your firearm. The guys and gals at the club are a great help.

I shoot my Taurus Pro-40 in USPSA during the winter (indoors) and have yet to get a misfeed or problem with the factory ammo.

Welcome - I don't know anything about a Hi Point - but ask whatever is on your mind / and hopefully people will give you their honest opinion..

Hi all;
Thanks for the warm welcome.
Like I mentioned,I'm diabetic, and I carry a six-pak cooler in my Bronco II between the front seats with my glucometer, some candies for a quick lift of blood sugar,a couple of sandwiches, and various other things.(a few nuts, boltss, hose clamps, small screwdriver kit, etc.,just for emergencies. And don't laugh-these things have made the difference whether I drove home or walked home before.) Point is,when I'm out in the B-II,I also keep the 9mm in the cooler, along with a half box of ammo. I drop the clip out and put it by the gun-I'm still a little unsure about the legality of carrying it there;I've been told that unless I have a CCW,the gun needs to be visible to a cop if he approaches my vehicle. I just think unless there's a specific reason the cop needs to be told the gun is there,it's better to just keep it stashed.probably also not legal, but I guess if I'm gonna break one law....:p If anyone is familiar with the Nevada laws,I'd appreciate your input. If not,I'll look it up and try to translate it into Regular People Language. the laws regarding when and where and how I'm legally able to carry, store and use my handgun are sorta confusing,it seems like so much of my life is in the "gray area" of the law.
I gotta sleep-I slept for 2 hours last night, and spent today herding a sick truck from Elko to Winnemucca and back to Elko. (Sticking floats, stripped distributor hold down bolt, whacked out alignment.) The plan started out to be driving over to Winnemucca, hooking onto a '93 Dodge one ton passenger van and towing it back to Elko. The sick running I could deal with, but the truck handled so LOOSE going over I had doubts about towing anything with it. Once the van was connected, driving around town taking care of some details,it felt like it was going to be okay, but as soon as I got on the highway I discovered this combination REALLY handled scarey. I toughed it out as far as I could but decided it was too dangerous to continue, and I gave up towing the van and dropped it off at a friend's place about 20 miles down the road. I'll go over another day with a trailer and a different truck to bring it home. All in all, today's been the longest week I can remember.
I'm outta here.

Wecome truckman, BigJimP is +1 on "honest opinion" not saying no ones bias on this forum about guns. Some people go off the deep end when some body is just asking a simple ?. Doesn't mater what you buy, or what you pay, if it's man made it's not going to be perfect.:D
