What is the general feeling about the Baikal 442 (and the other Baikal Makarov designs) amongst Makarov owners?

Looks like a good bet for a brand new Mak

Looks like a Mak, but what's that button under the slide stop. If it's a mag release I want one, trigger guard looks a little cheesy though.

And just how on earth have they made 9x19 safe in a straight blowback design, I thought that required some form of delayed unlocking mechanism.

Probably illegal under the handgun import regulations. Anyone know for sure ?

Yep,and I would buy one in a minute.This
version comes in 9x19(9mm).

What is it about these that makes them illegal to import? Are the other Baikal pistols unimportable (is that a word?) as well?

I'd probably buy several other Russky pistols as well as this Mak if they were available.

Manually racking the slide on a smallish blow-back 9x19 with very little mass in the slide would be a real chore for some people (especially the very market they are targeting: smaller folks and women).
The recoil spring has got to be approaching 30lbs or better.

I read an article in SOF once where they talked about Baikal using a helically fluted chamber to 'hold' the brass and retard the blowback. Not sure if they ever went to this, but it sounded like it might work. It would most likely be a reloader's nightmare though.

It looks like a fun gun to shoot. Who distributes Baikal firearms? Does anyone currently import from them now?

If it's the size of a Mak, and chambered in 9x19, my Glock 26 is history. Reckon if they're being imported yet?

According to Baikal's www site their US distributor is EAA

European American Armory Corp.

However on EAA's site all they have listed is one of the target pistols :(

Sorry to disappoint you guys, but no handguns from Russia!!! They cannot be imported because of a "trade agreement" that our dear departed ex president, Comrade Klinton, made with his buddy Boris. From what I understand, they agree to not flood American streets with cheap saturday night specials (read Makarovs) and we send them our tax dollars to keep their economy afloat!!!:barf: Klinton's idea of a "free" market!!:barf: :barf: :barf: This is why you can't get Makarov's from Russia. Klinton tried to make the same "agreement" with Bulgaria, but to their credit, they told him to go straight to HELL!!!! Hence, you can buy "circle 10" Maks to this day!!!:)

If that 9mm Luger Makarov is a straight blow back design, it will have the recoil spring from hell installed in it, just like the Pocket 9 did.

I see on Baikal's web page that there's a 9mm Parabellum Makarov. Are they available?

According to the director Russian Affairs at former importer B-West, they tested the 9x19 Makarov availabe from Baikal. The way the 9x19 Makarov works is that the chamber is scored or serrated, the brass gets blown out into those serrations thereby retarding blowback. The result is that the brass is shredded and unusable for reloading, the brass is tossed into low orbit, and the recoil of the gun is horrendous. For liability reasons, B-West refused to import these.
Similarly, reaming the chamber of a .380 ACP pistol by 2 "silly millimeters" is discouraged. Naturally, if you want to shoot only handloads and know what you're doing while working up a load, you can try this. I suggest a good life insurance policy first though.

I emailed EAA ... the verified that they cannot import any of the centerfire handguns.

They do import the Baikal IZH35M target pistols though

I guess it wouldn't be able to use Russia's precious Wolf ammunition, due to the unyielding steel cases. That would go for all Russian and Chinese manufactured steel-cased ammunition.

I am always impressed by Russian designed weapons, but I think I would stay away from this eccentric design even if it were imported... it just doesn't sound kosher to me. It seems to put too much emphasis on the performance of the ammunition for proper functioning.

And members of the Proletariat are expendable for the "greater good."

Russians used soldiers as human minesweepers, so what are a few guys killed or maimed by
the occasional defective pistol or ammo?
