As some of you know I've been in the testing process for the last little while with a few departments here in Utah. (full-time, sworn position).

I didn't make my first choice because the city elected a good for nothing liberal ex-ACLU lawyer to be mayor (yes Utahns you know the one I'm talking about). I was near the top of their eligibility list after most of the testing. Then the department's shrink decided I was too aggresive and didn't fit their psycological profile (played competitive sports, owns handguns and assault rifles, has a CCW, enjoys arguing, hates to lose). About half of the other applicants got flunked also. So much for that.

And this morning I was doing the physical testing for my second choice, I screwed up on the mile and a half run and missed it by 10 seconds. :( My fault, did bad, no excuses. They don't hire again untill August 2001. :(

So now I'm looking for some place else to work. I'm going to apply at a few other Utah departments this week, but neither I nor my wife are very attached to this state. Its a good place, but we could go somewhere else and be just as happy.

Do any of you know of any really good departments to work for that are currently hiring? My requirements are that it is a high quality professional place to be at. I would prefer a place with plenty to do, not too sleepy, perhaps a larger department, but medium is okay also. For pay, I would like to make a good middle class wage, benefits, you know the normal stuff.

I would prefer a state that would allow CCW for my wife. Also she would like to live in an area where it doesn't get too awfully hot, she doesn't deal well with extreme heat.

And no California jobs! I got the heck out of that place and will never never live there again if I can possibly help it.

Any ideas? Opinions? Please help. We are getting poorer daily. ;)

Also, I forgot, I need a department that will pay for training. I am not Cat 1 certified. I have no military background, but I do have a bachelors degree.

I'm an LEO with New Orleans, and I would have to say that any of the departments down South would welcome you with open arms. Even with our anti-gun mayor, the department still urges recruits to join the NRA, protect the 2nd and vote for pro-gun candidates.

Texas departments seem to pay better than here, but the cost of living is much less anywhere down South.

A nice house (new - 5years old) can be had for under $75,000.00 with land usually.

Thanks guys, and especially for that link. Tons of good info there.

I've thought about the south a little, I lived in Alabama for a while and really liked the atmosphere. Hmm...

Corpus PD has some serious problems, (political) you really shouldn't consider them your first choice. Austin is putting together an academy for the end of Oct, and Houston runs 4 or so academies a year. Cadet pay for both runs somewhere around 24,000$, with a pretty good jump once you hit the street. Austin is pretty good with longevity pay and perks for different shifts, languages, education and such. Austin Park Police is hiring currently also, Physical agility test is much harder though. 2 mile run, 2 mile bike ride, and 100yd swim.

Plano, Texas is a good one to look at. Also Collin County SO which serves Plano. I work for the Collin County Sheriff. This is a really fast growing area and shows no sign of slowing down. The Texas CHL would be perfect for the both of you and classes are held right in McKinney at Collin County Gun Range, Hwy 380.

Sure, it can and had been hot down here but we do have air conditioning!

Racegun, I had a friend try out for Plano PD. He told his Dad he wanted to be a Plano cop. His Dad said good son, you be a plain ole cop. :) Guess you had to be there.
Larry, Dallas PD is always looking. They have a reputation for having a very good academy.

Larry, once here, you will wonder why it took you so long to get here. Texas is a great state. Sure we're getting infested with yankees, but if they gotta come, we'd rather have your type than the other.

Correia, one department that I was very tempted to goto was Steamboat Springs Colorado... not too far away and you will be living and working in probably the most beautiful location on the planet. Colorado POST aint hard to pass... after all, they let me pass it! :D
Places to AVOID: WEST VALLY, KEARNS, MURRAY... LA, CHICAGO, NEW YORK... :D Good Luck!

Corriea, go to www.ajb.dni.us and search under the category "protective services". You can narrow your search by state, posting date, salary and experience. You can also search specifically for jobs as police officers, game wardens, jailers etc.
Plano TX is going to be conducting a civil service exam soon, so if that interests you visit the web site and sign up. San Antonio PD is also hiring, and Austin PD is always accepting applications.

Check out the Lubbock TX police dept. The date for application to the current academy just passed, but they still may let you get in. If not they offer two academies per year. Pay is good at $29,631 during first year of training and $33,037 after that with yearly increases.

Lubbock is a medium sized town of about 200,000 people and has a low cost of living compared to Austin, Plano and other places like that. http://police.ci.lubbock.tx.us/recruiting.htm

Thanks everybody, I spent all day yesterday on the phone with various departments. I have received a deluge of e-mails from TFLers all over the place. You guys rock!

Now I start doing paper work, and we see where we wind up. I will let you know.

And really, I want to give all of you my sincerest thanks for helping out.
