Herters U-9 30-06: How remove the bolt?

I recently received this Herters rifle from my dad - and it needs a good cleaning. But I can't figure out how to remove the bolt! He said a gunsmith once removed it but my dad could never replicate that feat. Tips?

Herter's U9 is a version of the BSA made for that old mailorder house.
The bolt stop is on the sear. According to Frank DeHaas in Bolt Action Rifles:
"To remove the bolt, raise the bolt handle and pull the bolt about halfway back, press forward very hard on the trigger and, and while holding this pressure, pull the bolt out.
