Herter's .45 LC for 1858 conversion cylinder?

Cabelas has a good sale going on Herter's .45 LC. It's a lead flat nose 250 grain bullet. However I can't find ballistics to how it compares to marked cowboy action loads. On the S & B ballistics (understand that S&B made Herter's ammo)table it showed their 250 grain flat nose to shoot in the 775 FPS range. The Taylirs website on conversions said load under 850 fps range are considered cowboy action and okay to shoot in these conversion cylinders. Just curious as to the actual Herter's 250 LC FPS speed; and whether the SAMMI specs are safe for shooting in my 1858?

I found the following at Cabelas website using a googly search for "herters 45 colt specs" it is from 2 years 8 months ago but lists the product stock code in the answer.

'The Herter's Select Grade Handgun Ammunition, item # IK-218178, .45 Colt has the following specifications: Caliber: .45 Colt (Long Colt), Bullet: 250-gr. lead round nose, Claimed muzzle velocity: 708 FPS, Muzzle energy: 278 ft.-lb., Reloadable brass case.

Hope this helps.

The 58 conversions are safe for just about ANY standard 45 colt ammo. ..But in my experience the heavy 250/270gr bullets hit VERY high out of a Remington!!! Not much fun to shoot when you can't even aim at your target.

250/200

drobs, that ACA is 200gr compared to the Herter's 250gr. Might matter to some folks. I shoot neither and am ignorant as to the quality of the components used for either.

A guy who shoots at my range had a gunsmith install a wide and quite tall sight of his Pietta 1858 to get around this. It didn't cost him very much.

Yeah Branko, A tall front sight would remedy the hitting high....but it just feels like overkill to me to run my Remington with such heavy bullets, and I shoot deer with mine!

I know guys are running BIG bullets to hunt hogs,,, but I think I would just get a bigger gun if I was going after something bigger than deer instead of abusing my favorite Remington.:D

I just drive to Sportsman's Warehouse and buy HSM (29.99) and with Mil. discount I get em for about 27.00 bucks a box. This is to feed my Pietta SAA Clone.

Oh HSM uses STARLINE Brass!! DOUBLE PLUS! One of these days I'll get set up to cast and reload 45 Colt (lord do I hate when people say 45 LONG COLT), but for now I just buy em, shoot, save brass! :D
