Herter's 38 Special brass

Howdy guys,

I got a bunch of once fired Herter's 38 special brass from a buddy. Got it all cleaned up, belled, etc. When I went to prime it, found that the primer pockets have such a sharp square corner that the primers will not enter the pockets.

I took my chamfering tool and put a chamfer on all the primer pockets, which fixed the problem.

This is my first experience with Herter's brass... anyone else have this issue with it?

Not with Herters brass, but I have encountered the "sharp pocket mouth" problem in other cases. S&B comes to mind and just a quick twist with a countersink fixed them all...

No, not me but I would think my Herter cases are 40 years older than your cases. I also use the RCBS case prep center. It does not slow me down when prepping cases, I have the attachment to remove military crimps and primer pocket uniformer.

Herter's=S&B

I posted about this exact same thing with Herter's .357 brass a few months back, with the same solution.

Herter's ammo is made by S&B - says so right on the box. Other than having to chamfer the primer pockets (easy and quick), my initial impression of the brass is quite good after several reloads. Seems fairly thick and has strong neck tension.

Have yet to try their pistol brass, but I picked up a hundred rounds of their 7.62x39 for reloading purposes and it seems to do just fine for an off brand.
