Heritage rough rider missing screw

I just picked up a used Heritage Rough Rider SA revolver in .22lr. It is missing the backstrap front screw. I need to know what size it is so I can replace it. The Heritage website offers the screw for sale for $5, but it doesn't list the size. I am hoping someone here knows the size so I can pick up a screw locally.

do you have a set of taps?, try to GENTLY screw one thats close to that size in there. if that dont work measure the hole with a caliper, thats your minor thread diameter. Proceed to google and look up some thread charts, or go into your local library and look at the machinery's handbook and look up thread specifications, find one that comes real close to the minor diameter of your hole you measured. Then eyeball that hole and decide if the thread is coarse or fine, and head to your local nut and bolt supplier OR take the backstrap to the store with you.

I guess I will call them tomorrow. The screw hole is recessed and my caliper doesnt fit down into it. I know it's smaller than a 6-32, which is the smallest screw I have on hand.

screw

you will not find the screw at a hardware store. The manufacurers like to use
sizes and tpi's that no one keeps on the shelf so the can charge $5.00 for a little screw. It's called 'profit after the sale":D

I would, except I don't have the proper tool for that.
Make a tool out of soft wood.
Whittle a dowel down to the diameter of the screw and gently screw it into the hole. Then gently screw it back out. The wood will be embossed by the threads inside the hole. You should be able to measure outside diameter and get an good estimate of the threads per inch.
