The Lawyer's Second Amendment Society (LSAS) was formed in 1994 as a non-profit
association. The LSAS was incorporated in 1996, and it is recognized by the IRS as a
501(c)(4) non-profit corporation. The purpose of the LSAS is (1) to educate others in the
legal profession that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to keep and
bear arms, (2) to fund and/or initiate litigation to establish the Second Amendment as an
individual right, (3) to coordinate the efforts of attorneys around the country with respect to
Second Amendment issues; and (4) to provide a central "clearing house" for research and
information about the Second Amendment.
The LSAS believes the Second Amendment guarantees a pre-existing, God-given and
individual right, which may not be infringed upon. Further, they believe that any law which
restricts or limits the right of law-abiding Americans to keep and bear small arms of their
choice is void. Of course, the LSAS recognizes that most (but not all) judges and other
government officials do not hold the same view, and that is why the LSAS was formed.
When it come to litigation, the LSAS's goal is to bring as many cases as necessary to the
Supreme Court until that body acknowledges once and for all that the right to keep and
bear arms is an individual right. So far, the LSAS funded and ghost-wrote the appeal briefs
in Hickman v. Los Angeles County. In October, 1996, the Court denied certiorari (i.e. a
higher court review) in Hickman. The LSAS has also filed amicus briefs in Hickman,
CRPA and NRA v. City of West Hollywood (challenging the "Saturday Night Special"
ban), which is still pending, and a brief in the successful Mack v. U.S. challenge to the
Brady Law. In those briefs, the LSAS was joined by Doctors for Integrity in Policy
Research (DIPR), Doctors for Responsible Gun Ownership (DRGO) and Law
Enforcement Alliance of America (LEAA)
The LSAS's primary vehicle for getting its message out is The Liberty Pole, a 12-page
newsletter which comes out six times annually. It currently has a circulation of 3,000.
