Here is an add on question for aging eyes.

There were good questions/answers on eye problems in the thread listed above but I wanted to post a question to the shooters out there that have problem with their eyes focusing.
This would be addressing the problem that bifocal wears have with getting items close and distant to focus. When I was young I could easily focus on both the sights and the target at any range even with glasses.
Now that I have to wear bifocals I can’t any more even with peep sights.
My question to you, Have you had laser surgery and did it help?I know people that have had it and said wonderful things about it. Going from very poor eye sight to where they don’t wear glasses any more.
My father was one before he passed away.
But none of them are shooters.
Any comments?
Thank you.

Not me but my wife had laser surgery. Before she had something like 20/400.

I had to do some weird work on getting her rifle sighted in. She had the laser surgery, she went back to normal and has no problem with normal scopes.

The big problem was getting use to the eyes after the surgery. She's always had bad eyes, out of habit, it took her a while to get over looking for her glasses when she got up or got out of the shower.

I never heard anything bad about laser surgery, heard lots of good things, I would highly recommend it.

My 64 year old brother is 20-20 for the first time in his life and except for his astigmatism has adjusted nicely to being able to see without correction. Young whippersnapper is giving me a run for the money on the rifle range now and that is embarrassing.

There is an additional question which needs to be asked: How does cataract surgery affect sighting? Also, what does one do to counteract age-related macular degeneration when shooting? Age certainly does have serious consequences for us!

I can't wait until I can have cataract surgery! Everybody I know that has had it comes out with near perfect vision, reading glasses at the most. Mine are growing too slowly for me.

I can't see the sights or the target clearly, so I point shoot and with practice do well enough for self defense.

I have had cataracts removed in both eyes. It is a rather simple surgery and heals almost immediately. Just a friendly tip: No matter how much they itch, do not rub your eyes in the first week. Touching your eye turns it into a white hot marble of pain.

I still need glasses due to a rather nasty astigmatism, but I am glad teh cataracts are gone.

I have had Lasik (originally 3/400 vision). I was told I would definitely need reading glasses, which has turned out to be accurate.

You may also find issues with dry eyes; the practical effect for shooting is that as your eyes dry out, your vision will get a bit more fuzzy. My vision slightly improves and degrades with the dryness of my eyes; you will want to keep drops handy.

Overall, it's worth doing.

My father had cataracts removed from only one eye and it made him mad,,,,, that they wouldn’t take the other one. One eye was trifocals the other 20/20:o
Thanks for the input

No lazer surgery here ....I have a bad stigmotism as well ...and I'm about 20/250 or 20/300 in my dominant eye now ...correctable with bifoculs pretty well.

Lazer surgery won't fix my sight ....so I had shooting glasses made by DeCot HyWyd in Phoenix. They make one lens - for distant / one for intermediate - and they can put a bifocul in bottom of lens .... so I can read. The combination of the 2 lenses / put the front sight on my handguns in focus and I can still see the target pretty well. Its not perfect / but its a solution if lazers won't fix your vision.
