"When some of my friends have asked me anxiously about their boys, whether
they should let them hunt, I have answered, yes - remembering that it was
one of the best parts of my education - *make* them hunters."

-Henry David Thoreau
=====

"We cannot but pity the boy who has never fiered a gun; he is no more
humane, while his education has been sadly neglected."

-H.D. T.

No doubt about it, he was a genius. The second quote in your post is as true today as it was 150 years ago.

Have emailed this page to the appropriate Walden and Thoreau-loving gun owners. Introduce them to TFL.

I hate Thoreau. I can appreciate some of what he said, but the whole Walden experience was made up. He lied about the time spent there. He talked about gardens that he never grew, and experiences that he never expereinced. And the worst crime of all... it's sooooooo boring.

I've never enjoyed reading a book less. I'd sooner watch Jonny Neumonic again.

With good reason, Walden was/is pap.

However, the one thing he wrote has rippled down through our society is his treatise on a fine old American tradition: civil disobedience.
