does any one shoot a colt 45

the story goes I kept looking at them never really deciding if I wanted one or not well my luving wife an son decided for me an bought me a big boy 45 colt lever action I was sceptic is because I have cataracs an don't know if I can see iron sights well I guess ill find out now
I would like to know about the ranging an the increments on the rear sight like if each notch raises or lowers say 10 yrds things like this would be helpful an save a lot of ammo on the try an error issue
I have 3 different loads for 250 gr,rn bullets if anyone would be interested thanks in advance for ann help

does anyone shoot this rifle
I called henry an they are no help they will not answer any questions it amazes my how a company can design a rifle an has no info or will not give out any info for the person that buys one of their rifles any other rifle company will go out their way to help you with questions
the questions I wanted to know
I shoot a ruger 7.5 in 250 gr. 8.2 gr.of Winchester powder @1000fps been using this for years an shoots well can the 45 colt 45 rifle handle this pressure sorry cant answer that is what I got well what can it handle sorry cant answer that either
next question on the rear sight the notches factory setting is set at 25 yrds cant answer that ok each notch is how many yrds sorry don't know that answer that answer either
the only thing she did tell me is don't use anything over 250 gr. bullet because they are not designed to shoot them
I asked a few more questions but am I stupid here am I asking wrong questions
I thought I would ask some questions before waisting ammo an getting into trouble when other folks know and can help
I am a avid long distance shooter with a custom built colt ar 30 in.fluted barrel .223 1 in 9 twist that on a good day I can do one minute group a 200 yrds. not to be bragging
my good friend that built it for me is in guiness book of records twice for long distance shooting some of u might know him ron k.lewis the king snake I owe all my long distance shooting skills to him
getting back to the colt 45 any help would greatly appreciated I would be glad to share my reload info with anyone just emailme

I have an older Marlin 45 Colt. It is one of my favorite guns to shoot. I reload, so getting very accurate loads has also has it's many rewards. I know this is blasphemous on a lever gun, but I put a Sig red dot sight on mine. Plan on one of these days harvesting a deer with this gun. Mine definately likes the 250-255gr lead bullets the best. Tried some 300gr jacketed, but they were only sized .451, and I just couldn't get decent groupings with these. Enjoy your lever gun experience, but be warned, it's catching. No one should own only one levergun.

do you have a reloading manual? You didn't say if you are using jacketed or lead bullets. I have a 1860 uberti henry and I shoot 250 lead bullets, and I use unique 6.3 start to 8.2 max. I'm using the Lyman 49th, but it does not have Winchester data. I also use imr 700x start load of 5.4. Just get some load data for Winchester powder chances are a gun company will not know a lot about load data.

I've been looking at getting an 1860 Henry rifle (the original Henry rifle as used in the civil war, NOT the modern company Henry) chambered in .45 Long Colt.

Hard to argue with 13+1 rounds of 250 grain .45 caliber lead bullets. Would be an effective hunting or defensive rifle even today!

.

No firearm manufactuere, that I'm aware of, would furnish information to a gun owner that might possibly lead to product damage and/or bodily harm - which is a distinct possibility with any non-factory ammo (i.e., handloads).

The rear sight elevator's incremental step's zero postition, etc, would depend upon the load fired; but I would presume most factory rifles are not zeroed, but would simply have their sights installed in as central a position as possible.

Since the Henry rifles are made to industry standards, I would expect they could handle any ammo that met SAAMI specs, or ammo of lower/less power/pressure.

If your Henry rifle has the brass receiver, I would further expect that it would be somewhat less than prudent to subject it to loads that a Ruger revolver could handle with aplomb.

45 henry colt lever

first of all I want to apologize for not using punctuation thanks to all I have another question concerning the cast bullets I have, they are cast 250 gr.one cannalure, an round with a small flat spot on top, they look like you just dug them up from the civil war, would they be just long round nose, they are also covered in a dry black lubricant I bought these many years ago I use these in my ruger 8.1 gr of 231 win. gives 900 fps in a 7.5 in barrel

henry 45 colt

here is some reloading info for the henry 45 colt, I have found that the round nose lead 250 worked excellent, along with Winchester powder231,@ 7.1 gr. their recommendation, pistol (ruger 7.5) will give you 862 fps., rifle will give you 1032 fps, I know this because I shot through a chronograph, to my surprise there was no recoil, no crack, sounded more like a small pistol, I have targets set up at 25 yrds. an 50 yrds. haven't had a chance to actually shoot a target yet, hopefully things will continually go smoothly for me, an it will be easy to set sights

henry lever target shoot

well guys I finally got to go to my range with my henry, target was set at 30 yrds , ammo was 250 gr. rn lead 1032 fps 8" target ,I shot all over it 5 rnds, I switched to 200 gr. swc an I put them in a two in. group, taking out the red, don't know if it was me that messed up, the first time or not, or the rifle likes the 200 gr. better, i plan on shooting the 250 gr. again both bullets chambered well an extracted well what is amazing is how quiet it is also I forgot to mention I shot from factory settings
I hope I posted I correct place I have two places an I get them mixed up

hener rifle powder loads

ok question on the 45 cal., win.suggest 7.1 grs.of 231,250 rnfp, for pistol, they will not give anything on rifle, but they say if it shoot fine in pistol, rifle should be ok which is,just 200 fps more, saami says 5.5 max, so ok who do u believe as a matter of fact, I was going to as what u guys thought of the idea of bumping it up to 8 grs because of the drop, or a lighter gr. bullet more fps, it dosent shoot 250gr. bullets well,200 gr.swc excellent groups

My Lyman manual shows 250gr lead RNFP carbine data.

231 6.5gr min, 7.4gr max 1069fps.

I wouldn't bump it up to 8gr using 231. That's quite a leap.

If your rifle shoots SWC more accurately, by all means use those.

By the way your reloading questions really should be fielded in the reloading section. You'll get more answers there.
