Henry .357 ejection problems

As I posted a couple of weeks ago, I got a new Henry steel .357 and I had a lot of jamming and ejection problems with it. I shot it a second time with Armscor FMJ .357 and it worked a little better. I had only one jam out of 50 rounds. However, it still failed to eject on about half of the rounds. The casing extracts and tries to eject but never makes out of the ejection port.

What is puzzling is that it will cycle complete cartridges with no problem, no jams and no failures to eject, regardless of ammunition brand. Does this suggest what might be wrong? If it's something easily fixable, maybe I don't need to send it back. They have sent me a shipping label already. When I described the problem to the Henry guy, he just said to send it back.

Seriously, just send it back. They will make it right, even if they have to give you a new gun to do it. Anthony Imperato truly means it when he says that he gives his personal guarantee to make certain that you are 100% satisfied and they will do what ever it takes. Let them make it right.

Just curious. Are you having ejections issues with only fast follow up shots? If you cycle slowly do you still have ejection failures ?

Sounds like you are short stroking the lever, the cartridge is loose in the extractor, or the ejector spring is broken. There isn't really anything else that might cause it.

I tried different levels of force to operate the lever. Like most lever actions, you need a firm cycle of the lever. Slow cycling makes things worse I would say. If I had to guess, it seems to me like the extractor spring is too strong, or the extractor hook is too sharp. It doesn't want to turn loose of the casing.

I will be sending it back. I will be interested to see what they find.

chaz,

For what it's worth, I have dealt directly with them on support issues and they have treated me well...

For the Henry .357, have any of you shot .38 wadcutters through the gun and how did it act with the lighter loads? I'm trying to decide between two guns available locally: one a Henry .357 (brass receiver) and the other a Rossi in .45 Long Colt.

Tony,

I have the big boy in 357 and in 44. I have cycled many cowboy rounds through both with zero issue. I have also shot bear loads through the 44 and was amazed at the range and accuracy for a pistol round. Have been meaning to chrono it, just haven't gotten around to it yet...
