Need some help. I looked at a smith model 19-5 today at a local shop. It has supposedly only been test fired. They want $475 for it which in my opinion is about $100 too high.

Two questions. Is the price they are asking out of line?
What does the hyphenated number mean after the model #?
Thanks, JW

WAY TOO HIGH! Here in cental DixieLand, a LNIB S&W
model 19 would probably be priced at or near the $350 to
$375 dollar mark; with the higher value demanding that the
weapon be in P-R-I-S-T-I-N-E condition! :D :)

Yep, way way way too high.

The "dash number" is the engineering change. It signifies a change in the manufacturing process.

Dash 5 came out in 1982, and saw the elimination of the barrel pin and cylinder counterboring.

I picked up a 6" 19-2 a few weeks ago, with an almost pristine finish, for $200.

The only thing wrong with it was that the previous owner had significantly reduced the thickness of the front sight blade with a grinder.

If really cherry...
And it passed my inspection of fit, function and finish...
I would give a max of $300.

Patience, knowledge; and carry cash.

Sam
