Help with Smith 1917

I have recently acquired a S&W model 1917 in pretty good condition. I want to restore the old gun to near vintage condition. I realize that the nickeled gun has no collector appeal, but I love the feel of the gun. Could someone recomend a good pistolsmith who could refinish the old warhorse in blue, check it out, tune it up, etc. for a somewhat reasonable price?

You might want to ask on the S&W forum. On top of the finish, the swivel was removed and those grips are wrong. However, the right guy could make this gun look way better. It depends on how much you wish to spend...

I have the original lanyard swivel and can get some original grips if I want. I have no intention of trying to get the gun original. I want to get off the semi corroded nickel and replace it with a hot blue. The cylinder takes some effort to swing out and the U.S. property marks on the bottom of the barrel has been ground off. I just love the looks, feel, and balance of the old gun and want to keep it in the family.

I hear ya. Fords of Florida does some good work on pistols. I don't know your budget however. Go for that matte blue if you want the revolver to look somewhat original.

Check around for local gunsmiths in your area. Shipping to an out-of-town or out-of-state gunsmith is going to add about $70 shipping to you gun work.
