I recently received a like new 17-1 in the original box that has been fired very little. This is for myu minor son. Can anyone give me a clue as to when the -1 were made. I know that some -2's were made in the mid 60's. This has a serial # BPW 61xx and I wonder what it might be worth.

The 17-1 started production in 1959 and went to 1961.

There's a problem with the serial number, though.

A serial of BPW would put it as having been made sometime in 1994.

And if it was made in 1994, it should have a full-lug barrel, as the Postwar Model 17 was discontinued in 1989.

17-1 and your serial number, don't jive. The 17-1 was about 1959/60 era ("K" prefix), but the SN number you gave (BPW), would be about late 1993. 1980-1983 were the transition years for the 3 letter prefixes and 4 digit numbers. Give it another look.

It is actually a 17-7

As you pointed out about the bbl. It has a full lugged bbl. The # is a BPW and the box is mis-stamped 17-1 but the pistol is stamped 17-7.
