Help with S. African 17-round BHP Mags

Hello!

I was wondering whether some of the resident BHP experts/aficionados can help me with a couple of problems.

First of all, how the heck do I disassebmle these magazines? I tried sliding the baseplate off, but it is STUCK! Won't move and I am afraid to use too much force.

Secondly, how the heck do I get 17 rounds into it? I can only fit 15 at most (after letting them sit loaded for 3-4 days) and that's only possible if I use a mag loader.

I would eventually load them up to 15 rounds anyway, but would like to know if they load and feed reliably with 17 rounds. Also, eventually, I'd like to be able to load them (up to 15 rounds) by hand.

Any tips anyone? Thanks.

Hello, Skorzeny! The base plates do slide off, but do require cosiderable force...and watch that bast#@d spring, it'll fly like a bullet!

These are a bear to load, but yes, you can get 17 in there. I had to load with about 15 rounds and leave loaded a week before I could do it, but now it's no problem at all. One of my SA 17 rnd mags, would accept only 11 rounds for a week; I then got it up to 16. Now it's fine.

They are just tough.

Best.

Second what Steven said, there are monster springs in those things. I could only load mine up to 15 at first (with mag loader). I'd advise loading them up and letting them set for a week and you should be able to get 17 with no problem.

I had to use the mag loader and tap them several times to load them initially with 17 rnds, but they feed reliably and work great! Leave them loaded for a few days and it will help..

What every one said!

Thank you all for the tips.

I guess I'll just take it easy and let'em be loaded for a week or so.

Say, does anyone know where I can (eventually) find replacement springs for the 17-round mags? Of course, I doubt I would shoot the BHP enough with these mags to wear the springs out, but it helps to know.

BTW, has anyone noticed a difference in the quality of workmanship between blued and nickeled versions of these mags? Just curious (and wondering if the nickeled ones are worth extra $5).

Thank you all again!

I found that if I turned the mag upside down, with the loader in place and bearing against the top of a shooting bench, and grasped the mag body and pressed firmly downward, I could press the follower in far enough to load the 16th and 17th rounds into a new mag.

I have both blue and nickel 17-round SA mags. One of the blue mags has a very rough finish (but it still works), while the finish is much better on the rest of the mags (luck of the draw, I guess). My nickel mags are a bit nicer overall, but I understand that it's possible to get a rough nickel mag, too. Functionally, they all seem to be the same.

HTH. :)

Hello - quick question... where did you guys get these mags? I'm still looking for my BHP (I got skunked at the show this weekend, didn't find a single one!) but when I do find one, I would like to try a couple of these hi-caps. Thanks to all!
