Help with rifle slings

Hey all,


I purchased a Mosin Nagant 91/30 rifle a while back. It came with a bayonet, sling, cleaning kit, all that good stuff. However, the sling was covered in what I believe is cosmoline, which I think is how they preserved the rifles and accessories while they were stored.

I was wondering how to get that off. I've tried washing it but apparently the stuff is very resilient. If anyone has had to deal with this and found a way, I would be very appreciative.

Very hot water. Ok, its December.....if you have a fireplace, put the sling on some absorbent material (towel, newspaper) in front of the fire. Not closer than you would sit, but the heat does wonders to loosen cosmoline. Then repeat the very-hot water. I would say "boiling" which works for rifles but the sling material may not be up to boiling temps.

I don't have a functional fireplace.

So just soak it in hot water? Or dip it in wipe it off? It's only on the actual sling if that makes a difference. The dog collars are clean.
 
Depends on how much cosmoline. The heat loosens the grease and the water keeps the heat from being too hot, which could cook the material. Anything to remove grease - soap, solvents, etc., will help, just be careful not to use anything that will damage the material.
