Help with Remington 788

I ran across a Remington 788 at a shop this week in .308 caliber with a Redfield 3X9 scope. It shows some field wear but no abuse. The asking price is $275.

From what I remember the 788 was a no frills but very accurate rifle. Any input is certainly appreciated.

Extremely good no frills rifle, if it is not beat up it will make you a super nice carry in the pickup gun, or a extra sporting rifle. Float the barrel and you will have a very accurate rifle. The nice thing is it will shoot mil surpuls for fun shooting. :)

Two things on the 788. I have six, but that makes me an accumulator, not an expert. I've noted that the trigger mechanism comes loose frequently. This is easilly corrected by a gunsmith, but can make the gun unsafe if left uncorrected. Grasp the trigger and push it side-to-side. If there is excessive play, you'll need to correct it.

Second, the bolt handle has been known to brake off the body. Ensure this hasn't happened in the past by examining the the attachment area.

That's an excellent price. I'd jump on it even if the trigger group was loose. That's an easy fix. eMail me if you need instructions.
