Help with my first long-gun...

I'm considering purchasing my first long-gun after a couple years of pistol shooting. Now that I have access to a nice, long, private outdoor range, the bug has bitten me.

I think I've picked out what I want..... a Ruger 77/22RS. Does this sound like a good choice?

(btw, a local shop didn't have any .22LR 77/22s in stock, but could get them easily. Wanted ~$400 for the .22mag they had).

Pros:

--I want a bolt-action. Even though .22Lr is cheap, there's no real reason to hurry every shot w/ a semi-auto. right?

--.22LR is Cheap. So I can shoot the hell out of it, and learn.

--Iron Sights.

--Scope Rings, for when the irons get old.

--Walnut stock. Pretty, clean, and classy.

--Lots of aftermarket support (triggers, etc)

Cons:

--Ok, I may not be cutting 1" holes at 100yds with THIS rifle, but someday, after I learn the fundamentals....

Thanks for feedback,

Less expensive option..

You could save a lot of money going with a used military trainer in .22 LR. Those can be found for under $100 quite easily, and will train you just as well. There are millions of them out there.

If money is no object look at the kimber
if the financial advisor is yelping with every penny look at the savage mk2 my son has one that ten shots at 50yds can be v\covered with a quarter... wal mart had one with scope for 99
synthetic stock 10rnd clip
nice gun inexpensive....

rvb, I can't see any flaws in your process.

There are lots of options to consider, but it sounds like you've picked one that will meet your needs nicely.

Rugers have a great reputation for durability. Enjoy.

You've selected a fine rifle in the Ruger. It will serve you well.
Others I will recommend are
Dan Wesson Coyote Classic (Just got mine, what a Honey and at an incredible price to boot)
CZ 452 (Well made, great value)
Winchester Model 52 or 75, (oldies but goodies)
Take Care

Thanks for the advice.

It'll be a few weeks before I would make the purchase (those pesky car repair bills, etc, etc:)), so in the mean time I'll keep my eyes open for other models mentioned, and if nothing grabs me in that duration, I'll go with the Ruger.

Thanks again,

rvb
