I bought a savage model 12fv with a 1:9 twist ratio, what kind of bullet would you recommend i use on coyotes. Im not looking to shoot in compititions just at wild game. I also am kind of comfused at all the different type of bullets like 55 grain v-max or MC or JHP what are those letters telling me. Correct me if im wrong but i know i can shot a little heavier bullet with a hight twist rate.

Thanks
Joe

Well all i can say is that is the same rifle i have model 12 FVSS.I have worked up a load that is deadly in it. Should work in your as well.

60 gnV-max
24gn RL-15
Rem 7 1/2 Bench Rest Primers
COL 2.29

One hole at 100 yards and quarter size at 300 yards.

Also if you need a heavier load for distance,This one works awesome also but requires the scope be resighted

75 A-Max
24 gn RL-15
Rem 7 1/2 Primer
2.475 COL--Single load,but so accurate you will not need a second shot.

I tried many combo of 55 gn bullets,but the rifle just did not like them at all.

Hope this helps

PS-None of these loads is pushing max load at all. Both loads are under 3000/FPS.

60gr. nosler partition
65gr. sierra gameking
63gr. sierra semi spitzer
62gr. barnes tac-x or whatever its called.
64gr. winchester power point
75gr. hornady a-max

All of those will work fine in a 1;9 twist. Mine shoots the low to mid 60gr. bullets more accurate than others.

I have a 1:9 twist CZ 527 and have had good results with the following bullets and powders. I would think that bullets of 60 grains or more should be effective.

All these results were measured at 100 yards.

63 grains Sierra Semi point # 1370
H335 @ 2750 fps averaged 0.409
H4895 @ 2900 fps averaged 0.421

65 grains Sierra Game King # 1395
H4895 @ 2900 fps averaged 0.475
H4985 @ 3000 fps averaged 0.400

75 grains Hornady BTHP # 2279
H4895 @ 2650 fps averaged 0.672

In my 1:9 twist, I give away a bit of accuracy to gain a bit of hiitting power over 65 grains. The CZ doesn't shoot as accurately with the heavier bullets. Personally, I think that a 65 grain Game King at 3000 fps should be plenty of weight for a large varmint, especially if I am are confident that I will hit what I aim at. To me, having the confidence in what the rifle/bullet combination produces actually reduces some of my tension when I put the cross hairs on something. It may just be me but it seems to produce better results.

I'm guessing that you are needing to shoot factory ammunition in this rifle since it doesn't sound like you reload. If the 55 grain (bullet weight, 7000 grains to a lb) stuff shoots well in your rifle I'd stick with that as that will be one of the most common factory loads that you will find. 1:9 twist isn't as fast as they get in .223 I'd call it more of the middle twist rate. I'd look at bullets between 50 and 70 grains and what ever your rifle likes the best that is what I'd shoot.

V-Max is Hornady's varmint bullets
JHP= Jacketed Hollow Point
MC= Metal Clad (basicly full metal jacketed bullet)

There are some more you might run across in your search:

BTSP= Boat Tail Soft Point
SP= Soft Point
NBT= Nosler Ballistic Tip
FMJ= Full Metal Jacket

Hope that helps a little.

Thanks alot every one for your imput every one of you helped me out. But if any one else sees this post i would still like to hear your imput as well.

Taylor gave a pretty good run down on the various bullet styles, so no need to elaborate there. I've got a Savage 1:9 rifle too, and being a reloader I prefer the 68 BTHP or 69 Sierra Matchking. Both are more target bullets, but are wicked accurate and will work for varmints if need. But if all was going to do was shoot varmints, then I'd opt for a V-Max in the 50-60 grain size.:cool:

For factory ammo look for stuff like federal fusion, nosler partition, and barnes tsx around 60 gr in weight. You don't want varmint bullets for coyotes as they're much thicker. Fed Fusions, Nosler Partitions, Barnes TSX, and most soft point .223 Rem ammo will punch a nice hole all the way through a coyote under 250 yards and often more.
