I need help on what 99 model I have. It is 300 savage,24" barrel, round fore arm, brass indicator,B in lever boss?1950?,has a running buck on side of action, serial number 5716xx,steel but plate, embossed checkering on fore arm and stock. Thanks for any info. vonn

Probably 1951, actually.

That means it would have been one of three models: the EG, the R, and the RS.

I'm going to assume that the "round forearm" means a beavertail, not the schnoble tip, so that would eliminate the EG.

The only way to easily tell the difference between the R and the RS is by the sights.

In 1950 both started to be drilled for Weaver scope bases. The R should have a buckhorn rear sight with a slider. The RS should have the rearsight dove tail filled with a blank.

Pictures will help.

it has the rear sight filled with a blank marked marble, front sight marked lyman if i am reading properly. Any idea on the running buck? thanks, vonn

OK, that would be an RS. They had the Lyman gold bead front sight.

I've never heard of Savage using Marble blanks, though.

"Any idea on the running buck?"

Huh? It's engraved with a running buck? That's definitely not factory.

took me awhile to get back, sorry. The left side of the action has a very fine line engraving of a buck running in some woods and it looks similar to modern laser etched not as deep as serial numbers etc. It looks like a factory did it. Has anyone ever heard of something like this? I am attempting to get some pictures but I am not the most computer fluent person. Thanks vonn

As far as I know, neither the R nor the RS were ever engraved with anything like what you're describing.

Savage factory engraving showing a deer was quite elaborate and covered much of the receiver, but as far as I know, engraving pretty much ended at Savage during the depression and didn't pick back up until some of the special offerings in the 1960s and 1970s, and as far as I know, that was machine engraved and done as a production item on those special models.

You really need to post some pictures.

I don't think that's a factory engraving.

It looks kind of crude, it's not in the right time frame, and it's definitely not in the style that I know of Savage ever offering.

thanks for your information and help on this I really appreciate it. Do you know if this gun would have been drilled and tapped for scope mounts from the factory or if they were done by an individual ? When I got it it was equiped with a 3 piece mount that seems to be adjustable for windage but there isn't any id on the mount. I had a little fun getting it zeroed. Thanks again, vonn

Your gun seems to be right in the transition period of when Savage started drilling and tapping their rifles for Weaver scope bases.

It could go either way, really.

A three piece mount?

Pictures, please. I've never heard of a three piece mount.
