I have the chance to get a used Maverick 12 gauge pump from a dealer I trust for $187. Is that a good deal? Thanks for your imput.:)

I prefer not to shop at "The Devil's Store" also known as Walmart. The guy who told me about the gun was new there so maybe he didn't know. I'll look into it. Is Maverick a decent quality gun? Is it difficult to clean? Does it need cleaning like a AK* or an AR**?

This will be my very first pump action shotgun if I get it & I don't want to buy a lemon. :)

*No real need unless you want to.
**Constant cleaning.

The Maverick is Mossberg's absolute rock-bottom "budget gun".
It's basically a Model 500 built with parts mostly made in Mexico and assembled in Texas, and some parts made as a unit.

As example, the pump handle is molded in one piece with the action bar assembly and the safety is on the trigger guard instead of on top of the receiver like the Mossberg 500.

As a shooter, the Maverick is OK, and many people get good service from them.
Most all parts will interchange with the Model 500.

How long the gun lasts depends on how well you take care of it. If you clean and lube it often it'll last for many years.
You don't HAVE to clean often.
Some people clean once a year after shooting season is over, or if the gun gets wet or starts to malfunction from dirt an no lube.

If you don't care about it deteriorating, it can go for a long time with no maintenance, similar to an AK-47.

If you have a problem, Mossberg is good about taking care of it.
Chances of having a problem go's DOWN as the quality of the gun goes UP.
Want a better gun? Buy a Mossberg 500 series, or better still, a Remington 870.

Thanks. I'm not sure how to break down & reassemble a pump shotgun. Is it very difficult? I can break down my SAR-1 easily. Is it more or less difficult to break down than a SAR1?

Depends on the gun, but most are fairly simple to field strip.

The Mossberg's are a little more involved than an 870.

Here's a site that has owner's manuals that show how to strip guns.

Look at the Mossberg 500 and the Remington 870 and judge for yourself.
Neither are that hard.
