Help with Beretta 8040-f Mini Cougar, Please

I made a trade this weekend, and my Smith 5904 9MM went down the road in trade for a Beretta Model 8040F Mini Cougar.

the Beretta is a compact .40 S&W, with 1-8 rounder and 1-10 rounder...

it came in LNIB condition, and seems to be a pretty sweet weapon.

I gave up my Smith 5904, which had 3 hi-cap mags, and 100 bucks to get this...

I am wondering if I did a good or bad thing... what are everyones opinions on the 8040?

NEXT question, any ideas where I might find a couple more 10 rounders for this gun?

Hi Hemi,

It sounds as if you have a bit of 'buyer's remorse'. If you're satisfied with the deal you struck, and the pistol works well for you, then by all means go out and have a blast (figuratively) with it!

Maybe a TOUCH of buyers remorse, but it stems from having traded for something I know little about...

I have NO remorse for having a Beretta, as I think they are FINE firearms, but I'm looking for more info on the 8040F Mini Cougar, just to put my mind at ease...

having been a Smith man all my life, these ARE a bit new to me!

Hemi,

The Mini should hit harder and carry easier than the 5904, so if you swapped it for use as a CCW you probably can't go wrong.

The more that i think about it, the more interesting the Mini gets. Would be a fun little rocket if you could get a .357 Sig barrel to put into it! Read an article in this months Guns and Ammo and several .357 Sig loads out of a Cougar were breaking 1400 FPS with 125gr bullets.:D

If you like the feel of it (the Courgars don't *fit* me), i would say given the current market value on S&W autos you probably did fine.

Thanks, Revolvergeek... it Is my new CCW gun...

We MUST thin k alike, as I just fired off an e-mail to Bar-Sto about a .357 Sig conversion barrel... I'm HOPING to find one available! ;)

the OTHER thing I want, is, since this came with a 10 round maga\zine, with an extended grip, and an 8 round flush mount, is more of the 10 rounders, but I can't seem to find them ANYWHERE... (I did order a pair of factory 8 rounders from CDNN this am!)

any ideas on where to find more 10 rounders? ANYONE???

(the link above wqas for 10 round 9MM mags, NOT the .40 mags, 40's from them are 8 round only)

Hemi -

I'd like to help you, but I really can't. I've only traded two guns in my entire life (61 years). Both were a mistake. I've never disposed of any of my guns since. My collection never gets smaller or stays the same - it only gets bigger. Consequently, I haven't made the type of decision you did, in over 30 years. ;)

If it were me, I'd now have a S&W 5904 AND a Beretta 8040F Mini Cougar. :D

Finances that day were tight, and I REALLY wanted the compact .40...

I mean REALLY...

I HAVE a 4006 Smitty, but it doesn't conceal worth a crapola, and I HAVE my 5906... (same as the 5904, but stainless) and again,
I HAVE my 4506... (Can you tell I have a "thing" for stainless Smitty's?) but I can't conceal them well.

I rather dislike the Smith "Compact" offerings, as in my area, all the small ones are that STUPID "tactical" gun with the INANE rail under the barrel... I need that like I need to shoot myself!

The Smittys are FINE weapons, and I love 'em, but this concealed carry thing IS important to me, and the Smittys were a BIT hard to hide...

POSSIBLY I shoulda waited to BUY the Beretta outright, but I traded off the NON stainledd brother to a gun I already own!

now to get a few more of the 10 round mags! :D AND to hear from Bar-Sto!

Hemi,

I’ve been carrying my Mini 8040F for almost two years now, pretty much daily. I’ve been very pleased with it. When I chose the Cougar I shot and compared the Glock 27, Sig 239 and S&W Chief’s – the Cougar won on several points. It “felt” more natural in my hand than any of the others, I shot it better than the others and dimensionally it’s only downside is the thickness. It does carry fairly easily, the short grip is the key. Finding the right holster is also important. I have gone through several a Fist #21, a Rosen ARG-Slim, a Horseshoe Leather IWB – currently, I am favoring two from Lou Alessi. For most daily carry his CQC/I with split belt loops and for casual jeans / shorts no belt his Talon (see pics below). And for OWB I’m using Lou’s CQC/S, the snaps help us non-LEO when we have to take the pistol off before entering prohibited areas.

I have done a few things to the stock pistol. First I had a set of Trijicons installed. Second I had Ernest Langdon due a trigger job http://www.langdontactical.com/main.htm . And finally, I had a set of full size Cougar Rosewood grips custom fit.

As for ten round mags – I got one at a gun show and another direct from Beretta http://www.berettausa.com/customer_service/FAQS/index_query.cfm?AreaID=GENERAL . Be careful with non OEM mags, many problems with auto’s can be traced to mag problems.

Let us know what Bar-Sto says about the .357 barrell – I’d be interested in getting one two if the price is right. BTW one of my mags is stamped 40 S&W / .357 SIG.

These guys look like they may be able to help you:

http://www.outdoorguides.com/outdoor/magazine.htm

"BEM8040CP Model 8040 40S&W . .10 Round. . . . . .BERETTA. . .$34.95 "

I don't know anything about the seller, just found them via a google search of the web.

These guys I have at least heard of before, but they are listing Promag manufactured:

http://www.gunaccessories.com/Magazines/Beretta/Beretta.asp

" Beretta 8040 .40 10 Round Blued Steel ProMag $19.95"

and last, and i don't know if least or not :

http://gunsunlimitedomaha.com/Magazine/Magazine.htm

" Beretta 8040 40 S&W 10 Round JM8040 $ 30.00"

I would stick to either Mecgar or Beretta mags personally for carry, but the others might be ok for range use if they are cheap enough.

Hope this helps.
