Help! Whos familiar with an Ithaca 37 or Stevens 350?

I just bought a Stevens 350 and I'm very pleased with it. It's a copy of an Ithaca 37 as far as I can tell. I have never taken an Ithaca down before and used pliers on the barrel nut in the wrong direction before I finally realized how the barrel removes. No damage seems terribly evident, however when I get the barrel reseated now I can see magazine tube threads. The barrel seems nice and tight in the receiver, the detent is locked solid, shells feed and eject great but I can still see a strip of magazine tube threads between the barrel lug and barrel locking nut. Is this normal or did I bugger my magazine tube?

I'm suspecting the barrel band (the thing the barrel rests on) may have been pushed back. it moves under pressure but can't move once the barrel is seated.


Like I said everything seems to function fine (aside from firing, I haven't yet). Just want to be sure....
 
Wow, ummm unload that gun. NOW, is that corrosion or just flash from the camera that's showing the white on that. If you can see the threads than you didn't put it on correctly. Unload it and redo it


Edit: BTW the parts from a 37 are not inter-changeable with the stevens/savage 350. My wife loves the 28" barrel for birds.

see the band just in front of the forend? it screws tight against the magazine tube and the barrel rests on it. I may have just pushed it back. When I loosen it and move it forward, less thread shows. Can anyone upload a pic of theirs?
 
If you did not get your barrel seated correctly your barrel lug you have something out of spec. If your barrel is not seated correctly you will have too much head space not good.
 
this look any better? I had to reseat the barrel band through trial and error. this seems like the closest I can I move it up and still remove the barrel. When fully tightened, barrel will not budge and

seated when looking into the receiver, but I'm still cautious....

Hi! I have been wanting a 12 ga. for a long time... And since Big 5 has these Stevens 350 on for $229.99 (269.99 w/28" combo) I was thinking about getting one and would love your input. It's the model with the ghost ring rear and I never bird hunt but really want a 12 gauge thats not crazy spendy just fun to plink with. Hows the quality control? whats a good round for messin around.... I'm pretty new to the world of shotguns so I'd love to hear opinions on these Stevens shotguns.

Its a good all around shotgun, my wife likes the 28" bbl for birds, and I keep the 18.5" for a barn gun.
 
If you have any doubt do not fire it. I don't understand the mechanics of the 350 but I would at least call Savage if I had an doubts. If you bought it from a gun shop as opposed to a Big 5, you may want to ask the dealer to take a look at it.

Went and checked one out,played with it a bit and decided to take one home. Ended up getting the combo barrel 12 gauge... Just gotta wait for the snow to go and then I'm off to the hills!

I have a Savage Arms Stevens 350 Security and you will have threads exposed on the magazine tube.
I was used to magazine caps being tightened to hold a barrel to the receiver but the Stevens 350 is completely different. The barrell is secured differently to the receiver and the magazine cap is used to keep the barrell from rotating.
 
You are good to go; the threads are there for you to loosen the mag cap down towards the receiver so you can free the bbl from the lug. Same reason you turned it wrong in the first place, seems counterintuitive I know, but remember you are not tightening the bbl down into the receiver you are loosening from the lug to separate them. read your manual. If you look what you are doing by turning it you are actually moving it down away from the lug recess where the little stud pushes against it, have your slide down about have and you should be able to turn the bbl to the half thread in the receiver to remove the bbl. You did good by buying the combo, great value AND +1 MORE capacity than the other models. (5+1 vs 4+1). degrease the cap and blue it w/ some bircwood casey cold blue and then grease the threads, if they are too tight again wrap it w/ leather before you get the wrench on it again. If I recall some early Ithacas had some kind of fold away tab that assisted w/ the turning of the cap
 
The older Ithaca's had a pin (3/16 dia) that poped out of the magazine cap for leverage.

Yes it sounds goofey but you screw the cap on to remove the barrel.

As far as headspace take a look in Hatcher's Note book on page 240 about headspace and guns with removable barrels. He does'nt name any names but you can figger that out. Also please note that the book was written before the stronger plastic shells of today.
