Help, What should I do?

Alright guys, there has been a string of beatings/robberies/drug problems here on my campus. The robbery, at gun point, was RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET!!! I can see the parking lot where it happened from my window. Now I work at night and arrive late home from work. I'm only 18 and I can not yet carry concealed. I can't do so on campus either anyway. All I carry is a knife and I don't want to become a statistic. Any suggestions?

What School?

Hey do you attend a school that is in West Philly? I work near there and we get emails about it.

University's in the city are ripe pickings. The students get drunk and are very vulnerable. There are no CCW's unless you have off campus housing because guns and school don't mix. (Which I agree with!) Security is a joke unless there is a campus police department. Penn has one but, they don't cover Drexel.

If you live off campus and own a firearm, take some NRA classes and get a CCW, but make sure you DON'T TAKE IT ONTO COLLEGE PROPERTY OR CLASS. If you do you will go to prison. As far as for when you leave class, buy some mace or pepper spray and carry it. Be observant of your surroundings and watch your back.

Good Luck

How about some campus protests/petitions and inviting the media or forming a campus watch organization like neighborhood watch if the university isnt doing anything but lip service. In this day and age the squeaky wheel gets the grease is now more true than ever. Als individuals can do a better job than governement in some regards as our neck of the woods in SE Texas found out during Hurricane Rita.

As mentioned by FirearmFan, good luck if you are at UPenn or Drexel - that's a tough area at night, especially the further into West Philly you go. Awareness of your situation and avoidance of trouble at all costs ...

No, I go to school in Williamsport. At Pennsylvania College of Technology. And all of this is happening on campus.

I alway, ALWAYS, keep my eyes open and scanning. My head is always on a swivel. I'm constantly in Condition Yellow/Orange.

What else can I do?

I already have some self defense training and have been practicing it. I carry a knife on at all times as that's all I'm allowed. The college is suppose to have a "banned items" list on the college police website, but it's none existant and they more or less act like "you should let it happen and be victim" attitude.

I REFUSE TO BE A VICTIM!!!! I just don't get why the people who are suppose to protect you want you to get hurt and then do something about it. Are they afraid of being proactive? They haven't even stepped up the patrols or anything like that. I usually see one or 2 cops a day. And guess how many I'm seeing now? The same amount.

And the worst part is that they inform of something by email. They don't hang anything up around campus. They don't hold meetings on what you should do to protect yourself. They've sat by and done nothing.

I don't understand it anymore.....I thought the police were suppose to be good guys and go and KATN (Kick Ass and Take Names). They even seem to be able to do that anymore. They just issue tickets. I don't understand......

Many colleges have public safety departments that have night escort/ride home type services. Maybe yours does?

I work at the mall and have to have my own vehicle so that won't work. The place I stay is relatively secure with a security guard around....but he is in no shape to take on a would be attacker. He is just around to call in the police if need be.

First, go light. Dump all the junk out of your backpack/satchel. You can probably outdistance an attacker better if you aren't weighted down. Students seem to carry tons of stuff in their backpacks. Second, get a light. A heavy duty 4 D cell Maglight. It can be utilized for blinding, parrying strikes and even offensively/defensively with a little training. Third, get a heavy duty sweatsock. Fill it with quarters. It will make a nice cudgel. If asked why you have it by authorities, you use a coin-op laundry. Fourth, look into local self defense classes. Fifth is a little out there but, buy a small fire extinguisher. I have seen ABC types used for good effect in confrontations. Get two. Put one in the car and one by the front door, even your bedroom. A odd little weapon is a delousing/flea comb for dogs. All steel, they make good weapons and you can claim that it is your comb.

Alot of good posts to your questions man. The big ass maglight can be very effective. On the other hand, the surefire executive defender is small, makes a good fist pack, has edged fins that extend around and past the bulb lens which means if you jab into someone's face, it's like hitting them with the end of five screwdrivers at once. Leave's a nice ring mark to later help in identification if it comes down to that. Plus surefires are bright as the living sun at night and stay that way till the batteries fully die. They don't die down as the batteries get older and older as Dcells can. Great for blinding at night. You can't hit what you can't see. And it's small enough and lightweight to carry in a pocket and how is anyone going to say you can't carry a flashlight. Check it out, very good light.

SureFire E2D Executive Defender.

Skip this suggestion. In some States this is an illegal weapon which could land you in the big house.

A better tip would be to get a nice long walking stick. Learn to use it defensively and effectively. Oriental stick fighting techniques are very effective. So are the european ones but they're not as elegant or flexible enough to handle surprise or varying terrain/close qtrs situations. BUT, you must get training in fighting techniques to use this weapon properly in whatever discipline you choose. Otherwise it's just a stick which is not quite suitable for playing fetch with your dog.

If you do this, you'll be armed and can protect yourself even against an armed assailant/robber. And, you can walk into the mall in broad daylight with it in full view and no one will worry about you or think twice about you having it. Especially if you're wearing a backpack and hiking boots too.

And remember, knives can be deemed to be concealed weapons and all states have laws which say what is and what isn't within that definition.

Glock31-I'd LOVE to have a SureFire E2D Defender but I'm in college.......I'm broke.LOL. All I have is my G2.

Thanks for all of the great help.

Look poor, look tough. Criminals don't want a fight, and they don't want to rob someone who doesn't have anything.

I'm good at the looking poor part....LOL, that's college for ya!!

I just try to keep myself in an attitude where I don't broadcast aggression but that I am ready to defend myself at the drop of a hat. It's hard to put into words....but I'm sure you guys know what I mean.......

You are your own first line of defense, never abrogate that duty to another person. Establish a student watch organization that works in groups and does patrols around the campus. I bet the campus police might scrounge up some radios for you to use to call in reports. If you make it unsafe for the criminal elements to operate they will find easier pickings. if the police cant protect the students it time the students excercised some initiave and took back thier rights to protect themselves.

So the general consensus is that I should do everything within my own power to defend myself (which I already do) and some how get the college to become proactive in the defense of the students?

I'm going to go talk to the Student Government and see if I can get a charter for a campus patrol group.

Thanks again.
