Help w/scope selection on Rem mod.788

Found a Remington model 788 in .308 Win. and looking for a bit of help in selecting a scope mounting system. The idea is to keep the weight and size down. Most likely I will be putting a Leupold 2X7 Vari-XII but may go with a 1.5X5, or similar scope. I am tying to keep the profile as low as possible and still retain a good sight picture out to 200 yards or so. Old eyes need the glass. This may have been covered some where in the older posts and if so please direct me in that direction. But, any suggestions will be appreciated.
Thank you.

Most likely I will be putting a Leupold 2X7 Vari-XII

I used to have a 788 in 308. I loved it! But, it somehow got used to barter my way into an other rifle that I loved more. I had a couple of different scopes that I used on it. The 2-7x32mm size is perfect. Leupold has the VX-II on sale right now at most of their distributors for $239.00.

Good scope choice IMO the 3-9X33 VX-II compact is another good as well as the 2.5-8X36 VX3. I've shot the 1.5-5X20 VX-III on a .375 H&H my buddy had and we both agreed the FOV isn't all that great on them past 100 yards. I've been shooting a couple of discontinued Vortex Viper 2-7 power scopes and I really like them as well as far as the value and optical quality, the just aren't as eye appealing on top of a rifle as the Leupolds.

good choice

I think the 2-7x is an ideal choice for your rifle. I'd stay with a 32mm bell for more light gathering ability. The 20mm "woods scopes" at the low end of the power spectrum do not seem to grab enough light to suit me, though I have a couple mounted on "brush rifles". But the 2-7x is by far the more useful optic (given equal quality).

I grew up on fixed 4x's, and that might not be a bad choice either.

Not the scope but the mounts and rings....

Many thanks guys but what I am really after is what sort of mounts and rings did you use on your Remington model 788? I am trying to keep the weight down and a low profile. I am thinking a one piece mount and something a bit more solid than the weaver style. And am I correct in assuming that my .308 Win. is a extra long action?? I am somewhat confused by this as I do understand the .308 win. family are normally considered short action rifles??
I guess I should have made that clear in the beginning...sorry!

Many thanks guys for all the helpful information. I am finding out that mounting a scope on the 788 is not all that easy but will come up with something that I like, I am sure! And, wnycollector I will try that scope you mentioned as is may just fit the bill.
Again I do thank you all.

I have a 788 in .223. I believe all 788 rifles are short action. My scope rings and one piece base are Redfield (company is no longer in business.) I recommend checking the fit of your choice of scopes with the rings and base(s). I needed a front extension ring mounted so the ring is behind the scope base dovetail in order for the ring to clear the objective bell of the scope and allow the scope to be mounted close enough to my face to get the proper eye relief.
