Help w/ Remington Sportman 78

Nowhere Man

New member
I came across a rifle I can find little information on. It's a Remington Sportsman mod 78. It has a custom heavy barrel in .17Mach IV.

Can the Sportman's be re-barreled? I'd be interested in making it a .223.

Thanks, Dave

The 78 was just a cheaper version of the 700. They came with a cheap hardwood stock and ADL style blind magazine. I think thy were made mostly in the 80's after the 788 was discontinued. Any barrel that will fit a model 700 will fit a 78. They make good rifles for custom builds because you can usually find them dirt cheap and they can use all the 700 aftermarket parts. The .17 Mach IV barrel isn't the factory barrel, so you kinda answered your own question.

You should determine how the centerfire bolt was converted to rimfire before making any decisions about a conversion back to center fire.
