Help! Trying to buy a Makarov

I was wondering if anyone has had trouble trying to buy a Makarov from SOG in Ohio? I know there have been a few who have purchased them there, but I have been having nothing but trouble. My local gunshop will not deal with them, period(personal reasons I guess)found another that won't do it. Working on a third that I am not sure is going to work out either. SOG insists on the gun being ordered by a FFL dealer etc, instead of the usual copy of ffl sent to them and then send back for transfer. Man! what a bunch of #$%# I have never had this much trouble buying a gun in my 40 years. Is there anybody else out there that has the German Mak's for sale that I don't have to stand on my head, spit and chew gum at the same time? Did try Dan's sporting goods, they are not accepting any phone orders, period right now,so I am @### out of luck for the moment. Anybody got any advice I would appreciate it. Thanks..PJ

I don't know where your from, or if you have any large gun shows in your area, but the shows around where I live have them for sale by the larger dealers. The unissued Bulg. are $149.00 here, and the local shops have the New commercial Bulg. in 380 for $229. I know it's got to be tough living with out at least one Mak, hope you find one soon.

Thanks guys, but have no problem with finding the Bulgarian Mak's,probably get one of those sometime, but as in the post was looking for a German one...Thanks..PJ

Sorry to say I got my Mak from SOG no problems, but I have a C&R license. I have purchased several firearms from them and have never had a problem. I ordered my Mak as soon as I seen them advertised, they didn't have them yet and shipped mine as soon as they got it. Paid an extra $10. for handpick and it was money well spent.
My gun showed up and its a nice one. Shows a little, very little holster wear and the internals are excellent. Can't say for sure if it was ever even fired.
Sorry to hear you having so much trouble, Hope you can get one. :)

I had the same problem with SOG not wanting to deal with me directly, but my dealer ordered it for me without any fuss. There must be a dealer in your area willing to order it for a reasonable fee. Mine charged me $25 for the transfer. Once this was done, the gun arrived in 2 days, and I was very happy with the EG mak. I'm not sure whether the shipping cost can be lowered. In my case it cost $30, but maybe you can have them ship it USPS for less? Empire Arms also seems to have EGs now, but they're charging more ($200) for them. One of these is well worth getting and preserving for its historical value. Plus, you'll get one of the better makarovs to be had. The day after picking up the EG, I got a Bulgarian mak to pratice with at the range while I admire the EG.

CraigZ,

Did you get your Bulgie Mak from Jersey Armory yet? I'm about to order one but I want to make sure they're unissued military Bulgies.

May not be applicable, but FWIW, it is a good idea to maintain good relationships with your local stocking dealers. Buy from them and pay a bit more, and also buy accessories from them. Then, when you want something that they don't stock, they are more likely to work with you and give you a break.

If the dealer never sees you except when you want to order something from SGN, he is not likely to be accommodating. Did you ask why they won't order from SOG? I am not sure exactly what you are doing. Do you mean the dealer gives you a copy of his FFL and then you place the order? If so, see if you can get a copy of his order blank and do the work for him. Makes it easier.

But I have to think that the dealer is not likely to feel more friendly if you become angry, as your post sounds like you are inclined to do.

Jim,I do have a very good relationship with my local dealer, have probably bought a dozen guns off him in the last couple of years, plus alot of accesories, ammo etc. This particular company he had a personal conflict with at a gun show, and would not deal with them, period. I can respect that, guys got a right to do business as he chooses. My problem was with the other dealers who just flat do not want to transfer guns, even for payment. I do not burn bridges etc,and can assure you frustration was a key factor in my post. I will find a way to get this done if I have to get an FFl myself(probably be worth it in the long run...PJ
