Help! target rifle with no accuracy

I just bought a nice target rifle and I can barely hit the paper with it. It is a used 6mm remington sako single shot action, with a canjar set triger (5oz.), douglas barrel, and wood stock it seems to be a very accurate rifle but at 100yds it is shooting a 1 1/2 foot patern!? I was shooting hornady superformance 95 grain ammo and some hand loads of 100 grain remington bullets with 41 grains of imr 4350. I have checked all the mounts for the scope and have used 2 difrent scopes a nikon and a redfield. Any advice? Can a barrel be that bad? Oh and I was shooting 1 moa with my 22 at the same target so its not me. Please help :confused:
 
Did you check the action screws? Barrels with a badly burned throat should still shoot better than 18" at point blank range (100 yards or less). What is the twist? Also, check your spent brass to make sure that the chamber hasn't been reemed out to a longer cartridge. Caliber/cartridge stamps can mean absolutely nothing when it comes to custom guns.
 
Yes - it definitely sounds like an issue either with how the action/barrel is seated in the stock to me as well.
 
That is the twist rate of the barrel? Measure it if you don't know.

Are your bullets matched to that twist rate?

My bet is you have a 1:14 twist for 68 grain match bullets. That twist is way too slow for the heavy bullets you are shooting.

Custom target rifles are often built to shoot one specific load. That means one bullet type/weight, with that bullet seated a specific distance from the lands. If you don't have everything right, you'll get 1.5 foot groups.
 
Hornady Superformance 95 grain ammo is hunting ammo that apparently your rifle doesn't like. Tighten everything, check the rifling twist, clean it well and try different ammo.
"...Can a barrel be that bad?..." Not likely the barrel.
 
Thanks for all the great advice. It must be the heavy bullets that won't stabalize in the barrel. I will try a lighter bullet I will post and let you know if that helps.

Everybody has already taken my fire but one more thing,,,, set that trigger a tad heavier!! maybe its unlocking before you're completely ready??!!:)
 
Like most everyone else said, I'd check the twist, along with the easy stuff like the crown. I'd bet that's a slow-twist barrel set up for the varmint bullets. It's easy to check the twist of a barrel, if you've got a good rod and a tight patch.
