Help!! S&w M28 Nysp

If anyone can provide information on these guns it would be very much appreciated.

I recently acquired a 4" M28-2 with red ramp front sight, TT, TH,
TS. The revolver is marked NYSP on the frame on the left side under
the cyl. The revolver is about excellent, usual drag line of
course, but not heavey and little fired.

This is of course the NY State Police version. The revolver came
out of New Mexico. I was happy to acquire this nice revolver.

So far so good... today I went into my local gun emporium, and
walked up on another similar revolver...except this one appears to
be unfired, with papers, cleaning kit etc. in the standard blue box.

This gun also said "take me home... and I'm a sucker for a
homeless N frame. Now, it seems to I don't need two examples of the
same variation and I think I will try to find one of them a new home.

My first question is, can any one give me an idea how much premium (if
any) a M28-2 with the NYSP markings should bring? Estimated price?

S&N's S&W bood mentions M28s so marked, but does not comment on
how many were made, nor the circumstances under which as new guns
would up on the market.

I assume the order was changed or cancelled and S&W sold the guns
on the retail market....but that is an assumption.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Thanks

I think most dep`ts trade in their old guns for newer to a wholesaler who then sells them to the public.

The one dep`t that I know that doesn`t do this, and I just mentioned this in another post, is the Pa. State Police. They offer active and retired members the opportunity to buy the guns they`re retiring. The guns are marked with the Pa. Keystone that`s a copy of the dep`t patch. They don`t like to sell anything to the public with the patch on it. This is why the 1993 Code 3 1/43 scale 90 Anniv. cars were sold to troopers only and hit a high of $250 each with collectors. They were originally $10 and they could buy up to 10 apiece. Some didn`t buy any.

Guns that are dep`t marked are owned by the dep`t and issued. They must be turned in when the officer retires etc. Maybe an individual dep`t has a deal where he can buy his gun.

I`m guessing the NYSP traded in the Model 28s to a supplier in N.M. for the down payment on whatever is their new duty gun. I think the 28 was their issue gun for some years.

Remember, you have a 28-2 which is a fine gun, markings or not. I wouldn`t mind one in good shape with the markings. It has a history which is nice to know.

AFA the one that`s unfired, maybe it was never issued from their armory. Value is in the mind of the collector.

This is mostly conjecture and I don`t think their are any NYS Troopers on the board who can confirm or deny this.

Hey guys, I am new to the board, I actually found the board due to this post...

I know its an old post, but Chuck, do you still have the NYSP revolver.

My dad is a state trooper. That is the Gun he carried till they upgraded to the Glocks. The State police allowed current troopers to purchase the guns if they so desired for (I think) $250. My dad was young at the time and didnt have the money to get it. He has been kicking himself for a long time now...

If you still have the gun and are willing to sell drop me an email man, maybe we can work something out!!

Admins - I see that Chuck has not been online in a long time. Is it possible for me to get his email address so I can contact him regarding the revolver above???
