What is the difference?

I have one I bought and right about the trigger next to the Made in USA stamp it says AirLite PD

My friend just got one recently and it says AitLite SC there????

Can anyone explain this to me?

Is one better than the other?
I guess the AirLite PD is just an older issue? If so is the older better or newer? (I don't know but some things like Colt 1911's most will say the older ones are better as no MIM parts so I had to ask if there is a difference here.)

Thanks in advance!

The SC indicates that the frame is made from a Scandium alloy. PD indicates that it is a "personal defense" variant. All the model 340s are made of Scandium Alloy. The personal defense models are a dark finish to contribute to their concealability. There is also a 340 PD-HIVIZ which has a different front sight. You can check out all of them at Smith-Wesson.com

My 340SC, bought NIB about three years ago, is silver colored. The 340PD is black. They are the same gun. The only difference is the color and the sights that are available.

Smith used the SC designation and then dropped it It is now listed as the 340:

Looks like somebody goofed at the factory. Maybe it was a late Friday gun when he wanted to get off on time or an early Monday gun when he was still hung over. What does the label on the box say?
