Help rescuing an abused 11-87

Ran across an 11-87 Premier in a pawn shop. The barrel and receiver have pits from rust. The infidel looks to have taken coarse steel wool or a wire brush (!) and wore the bluing off a place on the receiver and the barrel in an attempt to get some of the rust off. The wood is in very good shape. It looks like someone put it in a closet and left it there to rust.

What (if anything) can be done to make this thing look better? I know it doesn't affect the function, but I am very particular about the way my firearms look. If it matters, 399.00 was the price on it, sure they would come off. 599.00 at the local wally world and 615.00 or so at sporting goods stores local.

I have no experience in gun smithing so take this any way you want.

You could try a nylon brush on a dremel for removing the rust then send it somewhere or have a gun smith re-blue it for you. He may even be able to "cosmetically" fill the pits.

Thats about all I can offer. sorry

This might be a candidate for after market "Parkerizing" or another custom touch like camo. These are pricy. If Robar is still in business, they have a variety of finishes, you may find one there that fits your dieas.

Cheap way is to cold blue it, but results aren't as good.
