My step father gave me a 22.cal pistol as a gift a few years ago,im getting my concealed permit and would like to carry it,what are the laws on carrying a concealed hand gun that is not registered in my name?

Any advice would be greatly helpful

I don't see that it makes any diff if you are over 21 and eligible for a CCW and the gun is not reported stolen or something. Anyone can buy a used gun from an individual in my state and carry as long as they have a license, as far as I know. Your state rules are the final word though.

Yeah i was thinking the same, ive searched all over the net and couldnt find any actual laws on this question, would hate to find out the hard way i was carrying illegaly. thanks for you response.

Welcome

It would help to know where you are to determine if firearms are even required to be registered to you at all. Odds are you are good, but ....

Use a different search engine

Keep searching. The links are there. I would hate to find out the hard way, too. An hour spent with an attorney would be time and dollars well spent, as well as going to a gun store and asking for referrals to places that conduct classes in weapons use and carry. The National Rifle Association is a big help here, too. Join. Also G.O.A. (Gun Owners of America). Spend the lawyer money last, though.

Do a search on these phrases. If you get no results, try a different search engine.

Concealed Carry
Carry Concealed
Concealed Weapons
Gun Owners of America
National Rifle Association (or just NRA will get you there)

There are several organizations that have web sites that discuss the laws, etiquette, practicality and morality of concealed weapons. At least one has links to all 50 states' legal sites.

Famously, Vermont and Alaska have no requirement for licensing of concealed carriers, but some localities may be able to override the state laws and of course, Federal Buildings, Schools, places where alcohol is served or consumed and other places may have special conditions. It is your responsibility to be aware of them. One state has no provision for concealed carry of any kind, but allows open carry almost everywhere and another, nearby state allows no open carry at all, but permits concealed carry with fairly easy availability of permits. (I know the states, but cannot remember them right now, but which ones are not important to the point - It heavily depends on the state and local laws.).

Good luck

First thank you all for the help.
I live in Oregon.I have read Oregons gun laws on the NRA site but was still unclear on this. Thanks Lost Sheep for all your info im definatly going to follow up on your links. As well ask the person teaching concealed class.

There is no firearm registration in Oregon. You will be perfectly legal to conceal carry any handgun that you legally possess once you get your license. Gifts/private sales in Oregon require no paperwork or registration except at gunshows, which apparently require a 4473 and background check, which is NOT registration.

Here's a good summary:

Just pick your topic and click on the appropriate map. Click on Oregon on one of the maps and you will get a summary with a link to the Oregon statutes.

Guns,,,, Registered????? In my Name??????????????

Sorry; never heard of such a thing. I have well over 20 guns, and NONE of them are registered "IN MY NAME". I may have bought some from a dealer that had to do some FFL paperwork; but those forms stay with him/her and don't go any further. And I never do a background check; because I have a concealed carry permit. And half my guns I've bought simply because a friend or someone in the newspaper had one for sale that I liked. Oh well.
