I have an old HR Sportsman .22 revolver. It doesn't have a serial number that I can see. All I know is that it is OLD. Anyway, the problem is that the pin holding the hammer in came off and now I can't get the hammer back in.

Is there a site with instructions or anything? Anyone have experience with reassembling these things? Luckily I have the pin, but I tried for an hour to get that dang hammer back in and it simply won't go.

It won't. The grips must be removed, the mainspring must be removed and then the hammer can slide back into place. I suggest a gunsmith as it seems your pin will need an oversized replacement to be machined and installed. I feel that simply using the one you have will be a temporary fix instead of a durable repair.

So you're saying the only reason it came out was because it was worn down? Are you sure the hammer on this model isn't supposed to be able to be removed? The way it came off just seemed like it was a normal dissasembly. The peice is not worn very much at all. All the edges are sharp and firm.

If I do take it to a gunsmith how much should I expect to pay?

e-gunparts.com has online schematics for some H&R's ( including the sportsman if memory serves). it will help guide you in where everything belongs.

OK. The quick route is www.galleryofguns.com click on the GunParts icon. The hammmer pin should not be removed. Your revolver rquires further disassembly in order to reassemble. I do suggest a gunsmith. The cost could be $25.00 up to $100.00 depending on hourly rate.

Good news. After struggling with it for probably three hours, coming up with some ingenious methods of getting it together, cursing a lot and praying a little, I got the dang thing back together! I honestly can't believe how complicated it was. I am just kind of stubborn about things like that, but I was about to give up and take it to the gunsmith, but I thought I'd give it one more try. I did and it went!

Thanks for all your help.

OK, BUT! You need to test a few things now for safety. Unload the revolver first. Ock the hammer single action. Ooes it still have a single action? If it does cock, see if you can push it of with your thumb without pulling the trigger. I Strongly suggest that you check the function before you load live ammunition in the revolver.

Good suggestion. I did and it's all as it should be. I fired it in both single and double action and it's all beautiful (except one chamber on single action doesn't fire, any ideas).
