Help on Colt backstrap marking

I have a 1931 manufacture Colt Bankers Special and marked on the backstrap is, "R.M.S. P.O. DEPT"
Anyone have a clue as to what this relates to?
Thanks!

In the early half of the last century the postal service issued pistols to guards and postal inspectors. Colts were common. The "P.O. Dept." sure makes me think it was one of these.

I believe that postal police and inspectors are still armed, but the clerks who once had guns no longer do.
