Help Needed. Rem Mod. 7 safety not working.

Not only is it not working, but if you run the bolt with the safety off, the firing pin follows. If the safety is on and the gun is cocked, when you push the safety off, the gun fires. Does it all the time.

I have never had this problem before, and need to know what causes it, and what the fix is. TIA

Sound like your sear screw is dialed out too far = way too little engagement.

Go over to The Smithy & do a search for trigger adjusting Rem 700s & start the process from scratch.

Certainly get this thing fixed before using it.

Unless you are an expert, this is not a DIY job! Return that rifle to Remington, NOW! Call them, explain the problem and they will send you instructions and a label for free shipping.

I'll take another stab at this.

You first say that the safety doesn't work & then that "when it's on ... " Confused here.

& too, sounds like it is just now starting to do this "auto-shoot" function.

Has this trigger been "tweaked" by someone?

I would disagree with Jim re "being an expert." These triggers can be tweaked very satisfactorily by following the adjustment instructions by anyone with common sense & a fair degree of mechanical compentence, BUT will also state that if you are unsure of any part of the instructions or won't follow them - get someone who does & will.

Too, if this rifle has never been tinkered with, I'd send it back to Rem.

Rifle has never been tweaked by anyone. It worked fine last year when put away after hunting season. Upon firing in prep. for hunting season, problem was discovered.

Safety will go on, but only if you slide it on while bolt is open. Close bolt, and the firing pin stays back, push off safety, firing pin goes forward.

If safety is off while you work the bolt, the firing pin follows the bolt.

For the sake of this question, lets assume that I am an experienced shooter, and that I am responsible with firearms, so that means if I cannot solve the problem myself, I will seek out a Remington armorer or send it back to the factory.

I still have the question, what is wrong with the gun, and what is the fix?

Marty:

Your safety is working OK. It's your trigger/sear that is causing the problem.

If your trigger has not been messed with, there at least two possibilities. The spring in the trigger assy. is broken. The trigger assy. is gunked up or rusty. You didn't say if your M7 is blued or stainless. If it's blued, rust is a possiblity.

It's not a big deal to remove the barreled action from the stock and inspect the trigger assy. If it looks like it has a bunch of gunk in it, it might be worth a try to hose it down with solvent and see if it frees up. If it's rusty or seems broken, I would suggest taking it to a good gunsmith or sending it back to Remington.

You might consider replacing the trigger with an after market unit. The factory triggers that I have seen recently are junk.
