Help needed identifying a S&W revolver

I recently inherited my grandfathers S&W 38 revolver but know very little about it. I'll try to post a scan of it later. Unusual features, it does not have a hammer, has a grip safety, and does not have a cylinder that drops out (it "breaks" forward to access the cylinders). Pearl grip and some patent dates running to '90. Any thoughts on where to start research?

Thanks for your help.

Post a little more info and I'll take a look in some refs I have. Need SN, bbl length, finish, bbl markings, etc. Sound like it could be a Safety Hammerless

Does it look like one of these.......

If it does, it looks like it is a S&W safety hammerless.

You can do a search on this board for S&W Safety Hammerless and dig up a few interesting threads.

Good Luck.
