Help me with Luger marks identification

Hi,

I am new to this place.

I have problems with identification of the following symbols (see attachment). I have DWM Luger 1918 with serial 3455 and aluminum magazine (with different serial no.). There is no information about unit. Magazine's serial no. is 3388 (n or m?), plus sign, and some kind of wing symbol (with no. 83?) beneath.

Can someone help me with precise date for Luger or magazine?

I cannot provide a "precise date" but if the serial 3455 is not followed by a letter suffix, it was in the first block of the year. They were making a LOT of guns, it is likely a January pistol.

The Eagle is a routine German proof mark as is the Crown over ? something.
The PTV may be an acceptance stamp, although not shown on the chart I found.

Magazine "3388 m +" is the spare magazine issued with pistol no. 3388 m. The magazine in the gun would not have had the "+"
Unfortunately you cannot know when it was made, they could have had a 3388 m every year that they made enough guns to get to the "m" block.

The P.08 serial number suffix did not reset to blank or "a" each January 1st so to get an estimate of what month the pistol was made you must use both the year, 1918, and the full SN with suffix. The Luger Forum has this kind of information.

Strange, such references I have seen said they DID start the year at 1 blank.
I used to have a book with chart but cannot find it on www.

But Lugerforum will have the answer.

The eagle symbol is the WWI or pre-WWI proof and acceptance mark. The letter is the inspector's mark. The magazine is WWII vintage; it was originally issued with pistol #3388m as the spare (holster) magazine, as shown by the + sign.

Thanks a lot guys. I am trying to obtain as much information as possible (including meaning of symbols, production date for aluminum mag, etc.).

According to John Walter:

"Polizeischule"

Zeugamt der Polizeischule für Technik und Verkehr; Berlin, Golssener Strasse 2. Distinctive police marks have been found on many P.08, together with holsters for the P.08, the Sauer 38h and other guns. The Zeugamt was the central police workshop and armoury attached to the "police school for engineering and transport." Trademarks: PT, PT monogram, "PTV."

and some kind of wing symbol (with no. 83?)

The "winged symbol" is a stylized eagle, and the number is most likely 63, which would be one of the Waffenamt symbols used by Mauser Werke. It would indicate production in the late 1930s.

Thank you @gyvel :).

I found that both numbers (83 and 63) are stamped on Luger P.08 by Mauser Werk. Difference is the year of stamping.
