Help me value my handgun.

I have a Kahr CW9 that I don't really have a need for now that I inherited a nicer handgun. I'm back in school again, working on a second degree and could use the money. Is it worth selling, do used guns hold any value, any idea what this one is worth?

Thanks,

J

A new one (comes with a single magazine) would sell in the low to mid $300s in today's market if you shop around.

So I would expect a used one showing no appreciable wear, and with a single magazine, would probably sell in the mid to high $200s. Maybe as high as the low $300s. Extra mags and accessories would bump that figure up.

Used guns do hold their value if:
- they have been well maintained,
- there are no obvious finish issues, scratches, dents, or other indications of abuse,
- the original box, any cleaning/takedown tools, and at least 1 extra mag are included,
- there is a market for that particular firearm.

You could get an idea of what your gun is worth by shopping online for your model firearm and see what the asking prices are.

At the end of the day, it's worth what a buyer is willing to pay at that moment.

I saw a rare 1975 Luger bullbarrel for sale- beautiful gun! Asking price was $3600. BUT, I was looking for a shooter rather than a collector's piece as an investment, AND there was a very deep scratch just behind the sideplate which suggested a problem with the sideplate each time the gun was shot. More bad scratches in the joint over the breech indicated to me that this gun could well have been abused... so... was a no go for me. I was not even willing to pay half that- purely because of these scratches and wear.

Auction sites

The asking prices on auctions may get you in the ballpark, For common guns the completed auctions are an excellent resource.
That tells you real dollars, not an owners fantasy.
Yes honey, I said I would sell the gun, see there's the auction right there........

It depends. I agree with the rule "Never sell a gun that you like".

Your LGS will give you about half of what they can sell it for. A pawn shop will give you less than that.

If you have a better way of selling it, cool. If not, and you like it, keep it. You will be glad you did when you are a bit older.

No, it is determined by what someone is willing to pay for it. The current owner can only set a price, the buyer determines the worth. ;)

CW9 is a decent concealed pistol, but certainly very utilitarian in nature. Brand new CW9s can be purchased from CDNN for $299 (I just bought a CM9 for the same price from them). Location can make a difference in price, but Kahrs aren't very popular on the used market as many people have never heard of them. I'd guess you'd get $200 - $250 in an outright sale, on average, for one of these.

Unless you need that $200 - $250 really bad, I'd hold on to it. It's a good concealed carry gun and underappreciated.

I was offered $125 on a trade. The gun is mint with original box. I decided to keep it. Depending were you live might not be much of a demand. In NY I'm competing with the K9 which has been traded in droves from the NYPD.

Hi Tallball,
I like that rule "Never sell a gun that you like"
I have also put $/EU into my guns that I can afford, which means I can tie up so many $/Eu in these firearms. The interest one earns through the banks is virtually nothing, so, I figure, might as well "invest." If I HAVE to sell, OK, and I should realize at least a bit more than what I paid. In the meantime, I enjoy shooting these miracles of engineering... as well as having one collector piece (a 1917 P08 DWM) which I do not shoot at all.

Back to Justin's Kahr CW9- I really hope he keeps this gun...

$250 - $300.
Two years ago, I bought a new CM9 from Scheel's in Great Falls for $339.99. Same series, next smaller size.

It depends on how badly OP wants to sell. Personally I think that $250 price is a bit steep. At $250 used I'll just buy a new one.
