Help me pick out accessories!

I need accessories for my rifle (Rem PSS .308) such as: Base, 30mm rings, cheekrest (maybe), swivel (quick detach), and a sling (preferrably leather, but I am open). I would like to know the best brands of each, models, and where I can get them (online if possible). I know virtually nothing about this, so I'm looking to you guys for help! Thanks!

Kmart & Walmart are closing out hunting/shooting gear for the season. I saw Uncle Mikes slings for 40% off at Kmart yesterday.

Brouhaha,
Turner Saddlery makes some darn good slings, in the style of the old military slings. Heavy duty, adjustable, well established in the rifle community, good quality. Uncle Mike's QD sling swivels, and a Harris bi pod.
Scope mounts are going to be the most expensive: go for quality. Badger Ord. and the Iron Brigade Armory make the best in the way of scope mounts. Choose a one piece (IMO), steel, prelapped, maybe something with extra minutes built in if you choose to shoot longer ranges.
The cheek piece, well that is the cheap part. Get some 100mph tape and a foam pad. Cut pieces about the width of the butt, five to six inches long, tape it down tight, add as many pieces as you need for a proper eye relief to the scope. Cheek pieces were discussed last month by the Battler, check the directory under the rifle section.
Good luck.

Thx a lot fed 168. I had pretty much decided on a Turner sling, probably their Hathcock model if just for the name (reading his biographies right now). I had also decided on a Harris bipod, but haven't decided on the model. Thanks a lot for the other info. I'll see if I can find them.

Badger Ordnance base & rings. The workmanship appears higher than Leupold.

As for slings, I prefer a simple nylon over leather. Leather (M1917) target slings are great for target shooting. Keep it light for field use and go nylon (which also enjoys the advantage of not rotting in humid climates or stretching in wet climates).

I took the bipod off my rifle and like the USMC, rest it on an inanimate object. Less weight and less to snag in the woods.

What is a good price for the Badger Ordnance Base and Rings? The only place on the web that I've found them is the McMillan site where they sell for $150 a piece. Seems a little steep to me, but again, I don't know what a normal price is for something like this. Any web sites out there with cheaper prices?

A few more questions: I hear people atlking about "pelican" cases. What are those? Also, just out of curiousity, do those scope mounts where the scope can be removed like in the movies work worth a crap? I'm talking about when you see the sniper putting together his gun from a case, he put his scope on sideways, then twists it until it locks in place. I would think that they wouldn't hold zero very well. But if they do, it would be a good way to be able to clean the optics without messing anything up, and also great for storage if your case isn't good enough. So who makes those if they exist. Any prices?

Pelican makes hard rifle cases. They weigh a bit and are large, but strong in case of a drop or an oops a daisy. Lots of protection for the rifle. You can cut the top layer of foam to fit the rifle, a good idea. They fall into the line of Browning, Creedmoor Sports, and Doskocil. There should be a valve for adjusting the pressure in the case, if that is how I have read it. I use a Doskocil hard case for my PSS. About half the price of a Pelican, does just about the same thing.
Plus there will be room in these cases for the essentials: cleaning rod, bore guide, and if you choose, a small box for cleaning equipment. I cut the foam in mine for the rifle, cleaning rod handle, bore guide, action tools, torque wrench, and a box of ammo.
I would recommend avoiding the quick release rings if you want this rifle for a precision tool. Remember like all things, you get what you pay for. The quality rings and bases will run about $150 to $175 on up, but they will not let you down. Good mounts ain't cheap.
Having too many moving parts is not good, too many varibles to break. The scope should be in the same place everytime.
I would invest in a torque wrench. You want the rifle set the same every time it has to come out of the stock. Check your local Sears and try the Craftsman wrench (in inch lbs), and buy the proper bit for the stock screws.
I would suggest giving Sinclair Intl a look for cleaning supplies.

I found the best place for the Badger setup is Premier Reticles , $236 for both mounts and rings , I went with the IBA setup , mine did need lapping . I used the Turner "Hathcock" sling in 50" and I would not want it any longer , it could be a 46" and work fine , on a full size PSS your studs should be a little farther apart so the 50" should be fine . I used the Harris BRM bipod and the Tanks Speedy Knob , all the nylon gear is by Eagle , their cheekpiece worked out perfectly , and the scope is a Leupold Vari X-III 3.5x10x40 Mil-Dot . I did have to tune up the rifle a little , my trigger was terrible and would not adjust out so I ordered a Jewel , it arrived last week and was defective so a replacement is on the way . I relieved the barrel channel and filled the holes where the swivel studs were drilled through into the channel with Marine Tex also the firing pin spring cut ends were dragging in the firing pin channel so I had to bevel them . I am just waiting for the weather to cooperate so I can try it out . I picked up a Crafstman torque wrench for resetting the action . Get a good cleaning rod , I use Dewey , a bore guide and dont use steel core brushes . I had ordered a Starlight case for mine but they never shipped it so I called and canceled the order , I am happy with the Eagle soft case , it takes up a lot less room . I have a picture of my setup in the "Rifle Photos" thread on this board . Good luck , Mike...

Going to chime in here on something. Of course you need to get a good case to transport the rifle in... Pelican or the such. You may also want to look at a Drag Bag. I've got both for my AWP. I use the Drag Bag more then the case. It is handier, holds more equipment (spotting scope & tripod, ammo, cleaning gear, full length rod, data book, & binos). Mine is an Eagle Industries... not sure of the other brand but make sure it has concealable shoulder straps so you can carry it like a back pack.
