Help me pick my next gun

I've got budget of about $1,500. Here's the categories I'm looking at:

-all metal 9mm semi-auto (CZ, Beretta, ?)
-Sphinx SDP
-perhaps an HK in 9mm (already have a P7 PSP)
-revolver in .357 mag (I'm thinking a GP100, not interested in a SW with internal lock).
-a .22 or .17hmr rifle (lever or bolt)
-????

NO centerfire rifles. The range I shoot at only allows pistols in any caliber (including centerfire) and rimfire rifles.

I'm open to any other interesting suggestions. I know I can get something pretty cool for $1,500, I just can't decide what. Any ideas?

CZ 455FS in .17HMR goes for about $550 and is worth a look for a rifle. It's full length stock, bolt action that is nice looking, accurate, smooth action, good trigger.

Henry Golden Boy is another nice .17 HMR and is less than $500. Extremely smooth action and very accurate.

Both are worth a look based on your criteria, and would leave you about $1000 for a decent hand gun. CZ makes some nice 9mm semi autos worth looking at.

With a budget of $1500, I would pick up a used pre ILS S&W K frame and a CZ 75B or similar variant. With the extra $500, I would send the CZ to one of the custom shops, fine tune it, and buy some ammo. Those are two of the best weapons in my collection for defense and target shooting, and can wholeheartedly reccomend them.

Here are my suggestions:

Sig X-Five, Competition - you might find one barely used in that price range - accuracy is truly phenomenal.

Sphinx AT2000, if you can find one

Tanfoglio Stock II or Limited - 10mm, 45acp, 40 or I believe 9mm (best buy for the money).

If you want a 1911, you can find a good one in that range.

Shop for a variety of used guns.....( good older, high quality S&W revolvers...even a lot of N frames will be under $ 1,500 ), a lot of good used 1911's out there in that price range, a variety of Sig Sauer's ....

and make sure you have some fun doing it ...( buy what fits your hands -- not mine )....but I'd have to cry myself to sleep at nite, if I didn't have at least one well made 1911 in 9mm....or at least one well made, older now, S&W revolver in .357 mag - like model 19's, or 27's , or 28's or even model 66's or 686's....;)

I'm all for a little pushback when it comes to our constitutional rights, but I always try not to become a source of concern when families are involved.
Let the parents watch their kids play in peace, if they can.

A CZ single action from Angus Hobdell's shop will show you that you are a better shot than you think. Also a Les Baer that you can find used for $1500.
A used S&W model 19 or 586 are good bets. There are a lot of good used "shooters" available if you spend some time looking.

Hi,

For Handgun.. well, I think everyone should own a nice .357!

I think that a Ruger GP100 is an excellent choice. You can get a 3",4" or 6" in either blue or stainless for less then half your budget. They also have the Match Champion and the Wiley Clapp versions. Nothing wrong with that!

Your idea of a Used pre-lock Smith and Wesson is also a great idea. I would look hard for a pre-lock 586 with 4" barrel. Those are real nice and you should be able to fine a pristine example for your price range.

Or, You could get one of those new production Dan Wesson Model 715 .357 mag revolvers found on CZ's site. They are stainless steel and come with the 6" barrel for about $1,100. But, great thing about them is the barrel can be removed with a special tool and exchanged for smaller barrels. So, you could get a 2.5" and a 4" barrel later and have a really cool 3-guns-in-one.

For Rimfire Rifle:

How about a CZ 455 Lux in .22lr? The Lux model has a great shaped stock for iron sight shooting and the wood is very nice. Well made and accurate guns.

And since the CZ 455 rifle's caliber can be changed, you could buy a 17 HMR barrel set and a 22 WMR barrel set.

The .22lr 455 lux, and both barrel sets will be about $700 total. So, one gun, three calibers for less then half you budget.

Geez, for $1500, you could get a new CZ 455 with two extra barrel sets ($700) and a new Ruger GP100 ($575-$700) and still come in just under budget!

classic rimfires

Colt Diamondbacks in .22LR are rare but great quality and, I think, great "Python" looks -- quite likely to increase in value over time if in top condition - 4 or 6" barrels.
