Help me out

I bought a ruger speed six. It has a 4in barrel and a fixed rear sight. Is there any way to put an adjustable rear sight on it? Maybe even switch for an orange ramp front while I'm at it?

You could machine the frame for an STI or Novak adjustable sight, and mill a dovetail into the barrel rib for a dovetail blade. Or just trade it towards a GP100 that is already set up that way.

Of course it can.
But will it be worth the expense and hassle?
And would you really pass up a legitimate reason to buy another gun?

Yes it can be done and will cost you Orange paint on the front sight won't cost you very much, add in enough shooting to bond with the piece and you may find seven wonder happiness as is.

I like the gun the way it is, just want too much from one gun I think. Funds are tight right now so I was hoping there was an easy fix. I'm going to use some sight paint for the front sight butthe rear sight blends in with the frame rather well. I guess its nothing that can't be fixed with practice. As far as machining the frame to accept the sight, I don't want to compromise the integrity of the frame.

Don't mean to sound overly critical but, given your dis-satisfaction with the fixed-sighted gun you have...why did you buy it?

And you don't come off that way Dave T. I kust like the exact frame size, having six not 5 and also happen to be the biggest ruger fanboy I know.

I think a lot of us have done that before, Hall, we get bitten by the bug and pick up a pistol in the LGS and say "Oh Yesss" but somehow it just never quite grows on us at the range or in the field.
So like G.Willikers said, use it as a reason to trade off or even buy another pistol with the bells and whistles in a different way, and one day you will find THE right one and have a life-time keeper. Enjoy the ride.

It is almost always cheaper, easier and faster to buy the gun you want rather than try to modify the gun you have into something else.

Its just that its so close to perfect and it will have a semi rough life. I'm thinking maybe I'll just ask my local smith what he thinks. I haven't put enough rounds through it to justify any modifications but some nail polish on the sights. Just to make the sights stand out a bit more on sunny days. Aside from that its my dream gun. Frame is the right size, balance is great, and in a nice caliber.

If sight adjustability is not a priority, it is often possible to get a better sight picture from the fixed sights by using, say, flat black paint on the rear and dayglo orange on the front. Or putting on white dots with a small stick.

Some experimenting might help a lot until you get the means of changing guns.

For the price of getting new sights just keep the Speed Six and find a Security Six for that!

I own several 'Sixes' and you can see from the photo below how a Security Six as more 'meat' on the top strap for adjustable sights.

Speed Six near the bottom left and two doors to the left is the Security Six.

Ignore the other eight guns... they just get m way sometimes.
