Help me out here

Here's my situation. I own a HK USP compact which I keep at home, and a Kahr MK9 which I carry. I really like both guns, but don't carry the HK since it's a little on the bulky side.

I've been thinking about replacing the Kahr, which I love, with a .357 snubby like the S&W 640 or Ruger SP101. My main reason is I would like to have a rugged, dependable gun I can take camping and kayaking (gators). Plus everyone says you should have at least one wheel gun.

I have always had semi-autos and feel most comfortable with them, especially because of the larger round capacity, but am wondering if it's time for a change. Maybe I just haven't bought a gun in a while and am making an excuse, or maybe I'm just losing my mind. What do you all think?

The velocity of a 9mm from your HK Compact 3.5-inch barrel is probably going to be greater than the 357 (still a 9mm bullet) will be from a 2inch barrel. Something to think about. And that's assuming your HK's a 9mm. If you have a 40 or a 45 it makes the decision even easier in my opinion. Stick with what you got. Or get a larger 357. Maybe a 4-6 inch.

If you want a revolver, buy the revolver. But I think that the HK will hit harder with 13 rounds of 40 than a .357 snub will do with 5-6 rounds.

If you are looking for an outdoor wheel gun, I guess it depends on what the wildlife is like in the area your are going to.

.44 Magnum in 4 or 6 inch is probably the best choice, especially if your are worried about black bear or mountain lions. Like they say "go big or stay home" ;)

Carry gun

Protectedbyglock got it right. You just want a wheel gun.
If I'm thinking of the right gun, the Kahr is an excellent carry gun, and unless you're going w/ a J-frame sized revolver, you're going to run into the same carry problem with your HK.
If you want a camping/kayaking gun, a revolver is great, but I also think Ben's right. Get a 4 incher stainless revolver, maybe a Smith 686+...and don't sell the Kahr.
Have fun w/ it.

Chroode's right. The right-sized 44Mag is actually not too bad to shoot. I actually found it enjoyable. That's the largest I can safely handle though. A good heavy 6 inch 44Mag would certainly do the trick.

I guess that's mostly what this is about. I just want a wheel gun. I had a hard enough time convicing the wife that I need a second gun. I'll have to work on her for a while for this one.

Keep what you have, just get yourself a wheel gun!!

Ruger SP101 is a fine choice, if you are going for something comfortable, look at the new Ruger LCR. There are also S&W air weights or the "Judge" from Taurus(410 or 45 colt).

If you never shoot the 357 before, be prepared on running a hundred rounds if not more during your range session.

Slides are cool and wheels are classy. Both are fun. Your buddies will envy you if you have both. Now list the cons. of haveing both. You will have to make this list because I have never found any.

Everyone needs a good revolver. If you can afford to do it, I'd keep what you have and get an SP101 or a GP100 with a 3 inch barrel. Either gun would be a good camping and backpacking gun. The 3 inch barrel makes a nice in between size gun, not too big or too small.
